BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Juniors Alex Stamper and Drew Johnson earned All-MAC honors as to lead Kent State's men to its best finish at the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships since 2014 on Saturday after at the Bowling Green XC Course. The Golden Flashes finished sixth, while the women's team placed 10th.
"Bowling Green and the MAC did a great job putting on this meet," said head coach James Croft. "It felt like a normal championship besides the masks and extra social distancing."
Stamper took fifth in the men's 8K after passing four competitors in the final 1,300 meters, becoming Kent State's first All-MAC First Team performer since 2012 in the process. The Medina, Ohio beat his college PR by more than 21 seconds and finished with a time of 24:25.2. Johnson was named All-MAC Second Team with a 13th-place finish in a personal-best time of 24:47.6. Stamper and Johnson are the first Flashes teammates to earn all-conference accolades at the same meet since 2011.
"Alex and Drew had a plan to stick on the front pack and pick off runners as the races progressed," Croft noted. "They succeeded in that, and the results were two All-MAC performances. The men overall ran a solid team race, and we will look to make big moves next year."
Leah Lisle paced Kent State in the women's 6K race, crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 22:00.0 for 22nd place. Nicole Fleming was close behind, placing 28th in 22:14.2.
"Our women were close to having a real strong day and finished just eight points out of eighth place. It would have been a good step forward for them. We had even bigger goals going in. Unfortunately, we just did not have the depth this season, and a couple crucial injuries on the day. I'm proud of their diligence and positive mindset this whole fall."
