FORT MYERS, FLORIDA- Florida Gulf coast scratched out two runs, one in the first and another in the sixth, spoiling another strong Luke Albright outing, in a 2-0 setback in the series opener.
The sophomore allowed the two runs on only six hits and struck out seven in his second-straight tough luck loss. Mason Studstill tossed six-plus innings of shutout baseball to earn his first win of the season.
The Eagles made the most out of doubles in the first and the sixth, using a sacrifice fly and a seeing-eye single to plate each run, respectfully.
For the Flashes, five different players recorded a hit on Friday night. Their best chance to score came in the last at-bat. Michael Turner and pinch hitter Eric Wentz both singled to put runners on first and second. The threat ended in Collin Mathews' at-bat when both Turner and Wentz were cut down on a double steal, ending the game. It was just the third time the Flashes had a runner in scoring position, Ben Carew reached the keystone in the first and Alex Ronnebaum in the 7th off a double.
Kent State (2-3) will look to snap their two-game slide on Saturday afternoon when they send Collin Romel to the mound. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
