Softball Beats Howard to Conclude Opening Weekend

ATHENS, Ga. – Kent State capped opening weekend with a 9-1 six-inning victory over Howard on Sunday at the Red & Black Showcase.

The Golden Flashes (3-1) pounded out 15 hits on the day. Freshman Morgan Bowers, who made her first collegiate start, led the way with a 4-for-4 performance that included a home run and two RBIs. Seniors Kellie Abeska and Maria Cegledy and juniors Brenna Brownfield and Kennadie Goth all collected two hits.

Kent State scored in its first trip to the plate for the fourth time in as many games. Following a single by Goth, Brownfield homered for the third game in a row to a 2-0 lead.

Bowers added a home run of her own in the second inning. The Flashes were unable to score in the top of the third, and Howard belted a solo home run of its own in the bottom of the frame to get within 3-1.

Sophomore Sabrina Kerschner and Brownfield each drove in a run in the fourth inning.

With two outs in the sixth, four consecutive batters delivered RBI hits to extend the lead to eight. Cegledy and junior Carlee Selle started the rally with back-to-back doubles. Bowers followed with a single through the left side. Sophomore Alexandria Whitmore then tripled in her first collegiate plate appearance to bring in the final run.

Sophomore Anilese Kelly (1-0) allowed just one run on four hits in four innings to earn the victory. Senior Madi Huck had two strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief work.

Kent State will travel to Arlington, Texas for five games in the Maverick Classic next weekend. The tournament field will include Stephen F. Austin, UT Arlington, and Kansas City
