Last weekend the Kent State softball team was scheduled to open 2020 Mid-American Conference play at Toledo. Playing league games was a planned reward for the Golden Flashes, who battled six ranked teams and a stellar Duke squad on the road in the opening month of the season.
A tough 3-1 loss to the host Blue Devils on March 7 left the Flashes at 9-10, but trending in the right direction according to fifth-year head coach Eric Oakley.
"As a team I think we were just starting to figure it out," said Oakley. "We had a really bad loss against Lafayette (on March 6), then the next day we showed some signs that we were thinking, 'OK, time to hunker down. We need to figure this out.' Duke was No. 11 in the RPI, and we played them well. Our team was really engaged. We had taken our punches, just played the toughest part of our schedule, and we were ready to take off."
