KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The United Soccer Coaches released the winners of its postseason scholastic awards, with Kent State's Cameron Shedenhelm and Karly Hellstrom each earning honors. Shedenhelm was named 2021 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I First Team Women's Scholar All North/Central Region, with Hellstrom being named to the Second Team. Additionally, Shedenhelm was also named to the 2021 USC NCAA Division I Women's Scholar All-America Second Team.
Shedenhelm, the fifth-year senior Business Management major out of Pickerington, Ohio, posted a 3.47 GPA. This combined with her dazzling play on the field in 2021, in which she led the Mid-American Conference in goals with 12, constantly threatening to score at a moment's notice.
Hellstrom, the redshirt senior Exercise Science major from Sudbury, Ontario, posted a 3.91 GPA. Shedenehlm and Hellstrom finished second and third in the MAC in points with 30 and 25, respectively. Hellstrom also led the conference in assists with 11 and tied for second in game-winning goals with five.
These are far from the only postseason awards this pair of Flashes were awarded. Shedenhelm and Hellstrom both earned First Team All-MAC honors, along with All-Tournament honors for their play in the MAC Tournament. They were both named Academic All-MAC, as well as All-Region by United Soccer Coaches. Additionally, Hellstrom was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
Clearly, Kent State will be losing two incredible talents in Shedenhelm and Hellstrom, as they both depart to move onto new horizons. But the legacy left by both players, capped off by a historic run in 2021 and trip to the MAC Championship Game, will leave a lasting impact on their teammates and fans for many years to come.
