
Santiago Leads Flashes in Win Over WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Sophomore Giovanni Santiago scored a career-high 22 points that led the Kent State men's basketball team in its 76-69 win over Western Michigan on Tuesday night inside University Arena. This is third-straight victory for the Flashes and they are now 13-5 overall and 10-4 in Mid-American Conference play.
Santiago's 22 points came off of 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Santigo also grabbed four rebounds and had an assist.
Malique Jacobs added 17 points, seven rebounds, and had three steals, while Danny Pippen scored 15 points and grabbed six boards. Justyn Hamilton rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Flashes with 10 points.
Kent State led 2-0 then trailed for most of the game until the Flashes used an 11-0 run in the second half to put them ahead, 52-51 with 10:04 left to go. A dunk by Hamilton extended the Flashes' lead to 60-55, but the Broncos kept attacking as they would tie the score two separate times threatening to re-gain the lead. With KSU up by one, 70-69, a layup from Santiago sparked a 6-0 by the Flashes to secure the 76-69 victory over Western Michigan.
The Flashes forced 11 turnovers in the second half and were able to score 18 points off the Bronco's miscues. The Flashes were solid from the charity stripe in the game making 27-of-29 free throws. For the game, the Flashes shot 40 percent from the floor and 27.8 percent from long range.
Kent State is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 20 as the Flashes host Eastern Michigan at the M.A.C. Center. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
