Flashes Shut Down Tennessee Tech for Weekend Sweep

KENT, OHIO- Max Rippl went five strong innings and Collin Mathews drove in four, leading Kent State to an 8-1 victory over Tennessee Tech on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.

Brett Roberts hit the first pitch of the game for a solo home run, but that would be all Rippl would allow on Sunday. The right hander settled down to allow just the one run, two hits and struck out six against just one walk. The trio of Peyton Deats, Trevor Pittman and Jack Kartsonas combined for the final four shutout innings and allowed a collective three hits and struck out six.

The Flashes used their speed to plate two in the second and take the lead for good. Justin Kirby started the inning with a single and would steal second, beating a throw from the Tennessee Tech first baseman off a failed pick-off attempt. After Mathews was hit by a pitch, the duo would steal second and third, respectfully. That set up Michael McNamara for an rbi ground out and Kevin Dobos with a run scoring single to take a 2-1 lead.

In the third, Ben Carew walked and proceeded to steal second and third. After a Miknis walk, Michael Turner singled home Carew. Turner proceeded to steal second and came into score on a two-run single from Colin Mathews. The three-run third broke the game open and never looked back. Mathews would add sacrifice flies in the fifth and the seventh to tally four runs batted in on the day.

The victory moves Kent State to 3-2 on the season while Tennessee Tech sits and 2-4. The Golden Flashes hit the road next weekend, traveling to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
