COLUMBIA, Mo. – Rain prevented Kent State from completing both of its scheduled games on Friday at the Mizzou Tournament.
The Golden Flashes (3-7) dropped their first game of the day in six innings to Iowa State, 9-1, but showers halted play in the bottom of the third inning against No. 17/18 Missouri with the hosts leading 15-0. The rain refused to subside, and the game will resume on Saturday.
In the completed game, Kent State fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning but responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie it. Junior Brooklyn Whitt drew a walk, stole second base and came around to score on a single up the middle by senior Brenna Brownfield.
Home runs in the second, third and fifth innings put the Cyclones ahead 5-1. They added four runs on four hits, all coming with two outs, in the sixth.
Sophomore Gabbie Sherman (0-3) pitched 4.1 innings and allowed four runs. Brownfield made her season debut in the circle, tossing 1.2 innings and allowing four earned runs.
The schedule for the rest of the tournament has been adjusted due to Friday's suspended play. Kent State will play its scheduled games Saturday against Drake at 10 a.m. and Iowa State at 12:30 p.m. The Flashes will then resume play against Missouri following the conclusion of those games. Kent State will no longer play on Sunday.
