KENT, Ohio – Junior Megan Turner delivered a two-out single to center field and senior Kennadie Goth raced home to cross the plate and give Kent State a 3-2 win over Central Michigan on Friday evening.
The Golden Flashes (17-21, 13-11 MAC) struck for two runs in the first inning. An infield single by Goth, walk and hit batter loaded the bases with just one out. Turner followed with a single off the base of the wall in center that brought in a pair of runners. Kent State was unable to capitalize on a potential big inning, as a base runner was caught stealing before a groundout ended the frame.
Central Michigan was able to tie the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
It remained tied entering the bottom of the seventh, which began with Goth reaching on an error. The next two batters were unable to advance her, but senior Alexis Taube was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to move the winning run into scoring position. Turner then delivered a liner into center field. The CMU outfielder misplayed the ball, and Goth sprinted home.
Jessica LeBeau (11-10) recorded eight strikeouts and limited the Chippewas to three hits in a complete game effort.
Kent State and Central Michigan will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
