Soccer Earns Team Victory Against Canisius

(KENT, Ohio) - The Kent State women's soccer team won its second game in a row Thursday evening, defeating Canisius, 6-0. This comes on the heels of the Golden Flashes beating Youngstown State in their last affair.

Against Canisius, the outcome was never really in doubt for head coach Rob Marinaro's bunch. Redshirt senior defender Karly Hellstrom picked up the first goal of the game for the Flashes in the 10th minute to give Kent State the early lead. In the 28th minute, sophomore forward Callie Cunningham grabbed a goal, assisted by Siena Stambolich and Cameron Shedenhelm.

In the 39th minute, redshirt sophomore forward Lauryn Arruda scored on a penalty kick. Then, just a few minutes later, sophomore defender Dalaney Ranallo gave the Flashes a 4-0 advantage heading into the locker room (assisted by Luca Ralph).

From there, it was relatively quiet for most of the second half. That is, until freshman forward Anna Memija put one into the back of the net in the 84th minute, assisted by Lauryn Arruda. About a minute later, freshman midfielder Cadence Smyth topped things off with a goal of her own, giving Kent State a 6-0 lead that would hold for the remaining minutes.

Each goal scored by the Flashes was done by a different player, and each goal was the first goal scored by that given player this season. Truly, the victory was a team effort.

Kent State took 10 more shots than Canisius, had more corner kicks, and had less fouls than the Griffins. Each side had one yellow card.

The Flashes are now set to undertake a series of road games, the first of which coming on Sunday against Northwestern. That affair is set to take place at 2 P.M. E.T.
