Lape, Arthur Lead Flashes Against Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Freshman Mary Kate Lape and sophomore Alisa Arthur each tallied a brace as the Kent State soccer team defeated Eastern Michigan 4-2 on Thursday night.

The Golden Flashes (3-6-3, 3-1-1 MAC) rebounded in prolific fashion after last Sunday's draw, while the Eagles (2-7-3, 1-3-1 MAC) have lost four of their last six contests.

Lape got the scoring started early, knocking home her first collegiate goal in just the third minute of action off of an assist from Arthur. Eastern Michigan was able to respond with a goal of their own, evening the score in the 16th minute. But from there, it was all Flashes.

Arthur scored her first of the game in the 27th minute, giving the Flashes the lead going into the half. Lape scored again in the 55th minute to extend the Flashes' lead (also assisted by #11), and Arthur added her second goal in the 77th minute to put the game out of reach. The Eagles were able to score one last goal off of a penalty kick, but that was all they could muster before the whistle blew.

This marks the first-career brace for both Lape and Arthur.

Arthur has now tallied at least one goal and one assist in two straight games. She is also tied with freshman Kelsey Salopek for the team lead in goals with three so far on the season and leads the Flashes with four assists.

The Flashes trailed the Eagles in shots, 11-9, but the squads were even with five shots on goal apiece. Lape and Arthur led the box score with two shots on goal each. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Melén tallied three saves in the match.

After coming in off the bench in the past two games, freshman Lua Suero made the first start of her collegiate career on Thursday. Junior Lauryn Arruda also made her season debut against the Eagles, playing 44 minutes as a reserve.

The Flashes return to action on Sunday, Oct. 9, when they host Miami on Senior Day at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
