KENT, Ohio – In a physical game from start to finish, the Kent State soccer team drew with Miami, 1-1, in a Mid-American Conference matchup on Sunday at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes (3-6-4, 3-1-2 MAC) and the RedHawks (6-3-4, 2-1-3 MAC) both extend their unbeaten streaks to three matches.
Sophomore Siena Stambolich scored the lone goal for the Flashes. Stambolich took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and fired it past the fingertips of the diving keeper into the left side of the net to give the Flashes the lead in the 20th minute. The goal was her third of the season and fifth of her career.
Miami was able to find an equalizer off of a corner kick in the 67th minute, and neither team could find the game-winner in the final 23 minutes of play. As a result, both Kent State and Miami secured a pair of draws in the third weekend of conference play.
Stambolich and junior Callie Cunningham led the box score with two shots each. Miami held a slight lead in the shot count (9-7), but was able to generate eleven corner kick opportunites compared to the Flashes' four. Goalkeeper Sarah Melén tallied four saves in the contest.
Redshirt junior Lauryn Arruda played a season-high 49 minutes as a reserve after she was honored pre-game as part of the Flashes' Senior Day celebration.
Kent State is back at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 9, when they host Bowling Green at 7 p.m.
