Kent, Ohio - The Kent State men's basketball (5-0) team will start their road trip at TD Arena against the College of Charleston (5-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. The Flashes look to extend their record to 6-0, something that had not happened since the 2002-03 season when current Assistant Director of Basketball Administration, Jim Christian, was Kent's head coach.
This will be the fourth time the Flashes and the Charleston Cougars will meet in program history. The last time the two teams played, Kent State won 58-53 on Dec. 21, 2013. The Flashes are 1-0 at TD Arena.
The Flashes have won four of their five games by 20+ points, and are the only team left in the MAC undefeated. The team has shown its dominance both offensively and defensively. At least five players have posted double-digits in the last two games the Flashes have played. Sincere Carry leads the team scoring 18.2 points per game and 6.2 assists per game. Miryne Thomas has continued to make a difference offensively, leading the team on Nov. 19 vs. Chicago State with a game-high 17 points. There have been a number of players making a difference in the Flashes game, including Malique Jacobs who currently leads the NCAA with 10 steals in a single game.
The Flashes continue to improve defensively making it hard for any team to compete with them. The Flashes have outrebounded their opponents 142 to 137. The Flashes have shown they can pressure the ball forcing turnovers and defensive rebounds. Coach Senderoff continues to be impressed with how the team has been playing "It's early in the year we have to continue to stay hungry and focused going into this week's games starting with Charleston."
The Flashes have a bench that is able to create just as much opportunity as their starters. Jalen Sullingers has posted double digits two different times this year. True freshman Delrecco Gillespie posted a career-high 11 points against Chicago State on Nov. 19. Coach Senderoff stated "Our bench has been a huge part of why we have started off the way we have and will only continue to get better."
Scouting the Cougars
The College of Charleston men's basketball team is on a four-game winning streak, including a win in their own Children's Charleston Classic. The Cougars have held their own in a challenging season only playing teams that participated in the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament including the most recent 77-75 win over Virginia Tech.
The Cougars come into tomorrow's game with nine returners from the 2021-22 season and nine new student-athletes. The Cougars are on top of the CAA conference averaging 84 points per game. From the free-throw line, the Cougars have taken advantage shooting 79 percent. Like the Flashes, the Cougars have proven they can shoot and their defense can clean the glass.
