KENT- The Golden Flashes and Northern Illinois Huskies each won five matches, but NIU picked up a trio of bonus points leading to an 18-15 result in favor of the Huskies on Sunday inside the Kent State Field House.
Jake Ferri got the Flashes' home opener off on the right foot with an impressive 9-5 victory over Blake West. Ferri had come into the match ranked second in the MAC while West checked in as the number three wrestler. Ferri used a series of takedowns and a couple of escapes to distance himself from West and secure the victory.
Brendon Fenton ground out a 3-1 decision over Lucian Brink to give the Flashes the first two matches on Sunday. Fenton got a takedown late in the first period and the wrestlers traded escape points in the defensive affair. Another defensive struggle went Northern Illinois' way at 141 as Louis Newell dropped a 3-1 decision to the MAC's number three wrestler at 141 in Jaivon Jones.
Kody Komara used take downs and a pair of near falls to knock off NIU's Dillon Nichols. Komara got the takedown and his first near fall at the end of the second period. He kept up the offensive attack in the third to secure the victory and narrowly missing out on a major decision.
The Huskies took the next four matches, three by major decision, which proved to be the difference on Sunday. The Flashes got victories by Blake Schaffer and Jacob Cover to close the dual. Schaffer followed the Fenton script and got a late first period takedown then traded escapes with Jacob Christensen to earn the 3-1 victory. Cover took the opposite approach, a late take down by Terrese Aaron put NIU up 2-0 late in the first period. Cover managed an escape with five seconds on the clock to make it 2-1 after the first, then tied it with a second period escape. In the first overtime, Cover got leverage on Aaron and was able to secure the takedown and the two points to earn the sudden victory.
Kent State stays home and returns to the MACC on Friday evening against Edinboro. The annual alumni match will start at 5 p.m.
