CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Kent State men's basketball team (22-9, 16-4 MAC) won its opening round Mid-American Conference Tournament game over Miami (14-18, 8-12 MAC) on Thursday evening inside Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.
The Golden Flashes started slow but rallied to take a 41-26 lead in the first half before a 6-0 Miami run closed the half and cut the Flashes lead to just nine at the break. Sincere Carry led the way with a team-high 10 points in the opening half.
After a Dae Dae Grant three-pointer to open the second half, the Flashes used an explosive 12-0 run to push the lead to 18 points, 53-35. The two teams battled back and forth for the next 10 minutes, and the Flashes held a 19-point lead with 3:40 to play.
The RedHawks stormed back and used an 11-2 run to cut the lead down. But the Flashes held strong and used clutch free throws by Carry, Tervell Beck and the game's leading scorer, Malique Jacobs, to hold on to the lead and pick up the victory. Jacobs finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, his seventh double-double of the season.
Carry and Justyn Hamilton each finished with 15 points, with Carry recording eight assists and Hamilton posting nine rebounds.
The Flashes' bench outscored Miami's, 33-21, and the team made 28 of its 33 free throw attempts to ice the game in the end.
