YPSILANTI, Mich. - On Saturday, the Kent State gymnastics team headed to the campus of Eastern Michigan to participate in the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championship meet. The Golden Flashes posted an overall score of 195.325, a mark which, while good, was not quite good enough to propel Kent State into the top 36 in the national rankings and thus advance them to Regionals. Therefore,ย this was the final meet for the Flashes in 2022.
Kent State began the seven-team meet on floor, posting a score of 49.150 on that event. Junior Karlie Franz came in first on the team on floor with a score of 9.900.
From there, the Flashesย went to vault, on which they posted a score of 48.925, with the highest-scoring KSU gymnast once again being Franz, who posted a score of 9.850.
Next on bars, Kent State put up a score of 48.200, highlighted by Franz' 9.825, once again first among the Flashes.
And finally on beam, their last event of the year, Kent State posted a score of 49.050. Her final time completing her routine in a Flashes uniform, senior Riley Danielson matched her personal record on the event with a score of 9.875, first on the team and tied for fourth place among all gymnasts.
Additionally, junior Rachel DeCavitch posted an all-around score of 39.175, good enough for second place in the meet. DeCavitch would go on to be named to the MAC All-Tournament Team in the All-Around category for her efforts.
Kent State's overall score of 195.325 put them at fifth place in the final meet rankings. Central Michigan would end up winning the meet with a score of 196.275. The other five schools registered the following scores: NIU scored a 196.125, Western Michigan 196.075, Ball State 195.900, Eastern Michigan 195.025, and Bowling Green 192.550.
Despite the sadness brought on by the conclusion of the season, including the end of the careers of six Golden Flashes seniors, the 2022 Kent State gymnastics season was one to be proud of, for everyone involved. Goals were met, adversity was overcome, and success was found. And based on what this team has shown over the past handful of months, the future looks quite bright for this group.
