
Kent State Splits Pair Friday at John Cropp Classic

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kent State softball team started Friday's action at the John Cropp Classic with an 8-3 victory over Drake before falling to 19th-ranked Michigan, 13-0, in five innings.
The Golden Flashes (5-6) scored multiple runs in their first three turns to hit but were unable to plate a run the remainder of the day. Senior Brooklyn Whitt extended her reached base streak to 10 games by after being hit by a pitch and drawing a walk in the first game and collecting a single in the second game. Junior Julia Mazanec reached in four of her five plate appearances via bases on ball. Mazanec recorded the first stolen base of her career against Drake.
Game 1: Kent State 8, Drake 3
Kent State's patience at the plate was rewarded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Three walks loaded the bases and Sabrina Kerschner scored the first run on a wild pitch. Another walk followed, and Jessica LeBeau was hit by a pitch to bring in a second run. A passed ball on a swinging third strike allowed Savannah Wing to race home and make it 3-0.
Kerschner delivered the Golden Flashes' first hit of the day with a double in the second inning. A walk and two more hit batters brought Kerschner home to score for the second time. Chloe Cruz then sent a ball to the left side of the infield that got past the shortstop and brought in two runs to extend it to 6-0.
Drake scored twice in the top of the third, but Kent State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Two walks and a single by Alexandria Whitmore loaded the bases, and Wing collected two more RBIs with a single near the left field line.
The Bulldogs added an unearned run in the fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Andrea Scali had three strikeouts and allowed two earned runs on five hits over three innings. Jessica LeBeau (2-3) tossed four scoreless innings in relief, striking out three and allowing just two hits.
Game 2: #19 Michigan 13, Kent State 0 (5 innings)
An error, hit batter and walk assisted Michigan in taking a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Brooklyn Whitt singled in the bottom half of the inning but was left stranded at first base.
The Wolverines added three runs in the second, one in the third and two in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Anilese Kelly tossed 4.2 innings in relief to finish the game and totaled four strikeouts.

Kent State will conclude play at the John Cropp Classic on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. against Drake. First pitch against host No. 10/13 Kentucky is slated for 3 p.m.
