AUBURN, Ala. - On Thursday, four members of the Kent State gymnastics team competed in the 2022 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Regional at Auburn University. Junior Karlie Franz and freshman Alyssa Guns each competed on floor, sophomore Sarah Haxton on bars, and junior Rachel DeCavitch on all four events.
Haxton excelled in her final performance of the season, posting a bars score of 9.900, tying her personal record. The four Golden Flashes competed as individuals during the first session of the day on Thursday, and Haxton finished fourth on bars out of 27 total participants in that session. Haxton's 9.900 on bars was also first in Session 1 among individuals/non-all-around performers. This meant that, going into Session 2, Haxton still had a chance at advancing to Nationals in Texas.
Ultimately, Haxton would just miss the cut to continue her season, finishing tied for ninth on bars overall when including both sessions. But given the fact that she was going up against some of the best college gymnasts in the country and finished tied for ninth out of 54 total competitors on bars, the sky's the limit for this sophomore.
And the same can be said for the other three Flashes gymnasts who competed in Auburn. While Haxton was the closest to advancing to Nationals out of the group, all four athletes should be proud that they made it to Regionals to represent Kent State. The scores of the other gymnasts are as follows: Franz posted a score of 9.875 on floor, tied for 20th in the two sessions. Guns posted a 9.775 on the same event. DeCavitch posted scores of 9.800 on bars, 9.750 on floor, 9.700 on vault, 9.650 on beam, for an all-around score of 38.900.
Thus, this officially ends all gymnastics competition for Kent State in the 2021-22 season. But it was one fun ride, highlighted by the Flashes putting up an historic performance in the regular season finale against Western Michigan and grabbing a share of the MAC Regular Season Championship. And with so much young talent slated to return next year, this may well only be the beginning of something very special.
