BALTIMORE – In the first-ever meeting between the Kent State soccer team and the Loyola Greyhounds (2-3-1), a hard-fought match ended in a 0-0 tie on Sunday night.Â
The Flashes were able to generate 16 shots, including seven on goal, but could not find a way past Patriot League Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Paige Sim. Meanwhile, the Flashes' back line of Tianna Harris, Dalaney Ranallo, Joey Skillen, and Abby Breitschuh limited the Greyhound attack to seven shots and only one shot on goal.
Kent State (0-3-2) came out of the gates strong, controlling possession and making runs toward the goal throughout the first half. Siena Stambolich had a pair of shots tipped away in the final minutes of the half to keep the Flashes off the board at the break. Stambolich and Kelsey Salopek led the Flashes with three shots on goal each.
In the second half, the physicality and intensity of both teams continued to increase as the game wore on. Neither team wanted to let the other onto their half of the field, let alone give up the goal that would break the deadlock. However, the Flashes were able to push the ball deep into Greyhound territory late in the half, generating most of their chances on the night from set pieces. The Flashes drew nine total corner kicks, including four in the final ten minutes of play.
A last-second effort from Breitschuh off of a Alisa Arthur corner flew over the crossbar as the final whistle sounded to seal the draw. The result stops a three-game losing streak for the Flashes.
Kent State returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. to face off against Youngstown State in their fourth straight road matchup.
