Flashes Host First Home Meet on Sunday

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics team is ready to host its first home meet of the 2023 season this Sunday. The Golden Flashes will face Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan as part of Kent State's Beauty and the Beast event, where gymnastics and wrestling will compete simultaneously within the M.A.C. Center at 1 p.m.
"Beauty and the Beast" characters will be in attendance to interact with fans and take photos prior to, and during, the event. There will also be a photobooth available for fans, brought to you by Water Street Tavern, and giveaways throughout the meet.
Following the conclusion of the competition, there will be a joint autograph session featuring student-athletes from both teams.
LAST TIME OUT
The Flashes totaled 195.925 at the Tennessee Collegiate Classic last Friday, besting Fisk's 190.025 and Southeast Missouri State's 195.350 and falling to Lindenwood (196.175) and meet champion Ball State (196.550). Senior Rachel DeCavitch finished second in the all-around with a cumulative score of 39.325 at the five-teem meet.
On vault, DeCavitch and junior Kyndall Gilbert led the way for the Flashes, both scoring 9.800. In her first collegiate vault, freshman Zoe Ranking tallied a 9.750 as Kent State posted a 48.700 team score in the event.Â
DeCavitch recorded the first 9.900 for the Flashes in the young season on bars, finishing second overall in the event and matching her career-best score. Gilbert also tied her personal best with a 9.800. Senior Olivia Amodei and sophomore Brynne Tsipis both earned 9.825 as the Flashes combined for a 49.050 in the second rotation.
Kent State showed significant improvement on beam compared to the opening meet of the year with a 48.775. Junior Sarah Haxton led the team with a 9.850, followed closely by graduate student Cami Klein (9.825).Â
The Flashes shined brightest on floor, posting the highest score (49.300) out of the five teams. Senior Karlie Franz and sophomore Alyssa Guns both earned 9.900 to lead the way for Kent State. Amodei (9.850) and sophomore Grace Wehry (9.825) both posted season-high scores, while Haxton's 9.750 set a new career high.Â
Following Friday's meet, the Flashes are ranked #21 in the nation on floor according to Road to Nationals.
SERIES STATS
Sunday marks the 85th meeting between the Flashes and Broncos. Kent State holds a 60-24 advantage in the all-time series and snapped a three-meet losing streak a season ago in Kalamazoo, 196.850-196.725. The Flashes' score tied for the third-highest in program history and the highest total since 2004. Alyssa Guns earned a 9.950 on floor, tied for the ninth-best score in program history, to win the event, Cami Klein (9.925) won on beam and Sarah Haxton (9.875) took the top spot bars.
Only four spots separate #36 Kent State and #40 Western Michigan in the latest Road to Nationals rankings.Â
