BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team earned a massive road win on Thursday night, earning a decisive 2-0 victory over Bowling Green.
The Golden Flashes (8-4-2, 5-2-0 MAC) earn their first shutout in the month of October and hand the Falcons (7-5-1, 5-1-1 MAC) their first loss in Mid-American Conference play this season.
Alanna Raimondo was able to draw a foul inside the 18-yard box in the 26th minute. Alisa Arthur took the penalty kick, firing a shot to her right that was knocked down by the Bowling Green keeper but he ball deflected right back to Arthur. The junior did not miss this time, pummeling the ball into net.
Arthur has now scored in three straight games for the Flashes and leads the squad in goals (6) and points (15).
In the second half, Callie Cunningham doubled the Flashes' lead with the first goal of her senior campaign. Siena Stambolich played a perfect ball through the midfield in the 59th minute and found the streaking Cunningham, who juked out the Falcon keeper for a wide-open shot on net.
Cunningham now has 6 points on the season and is tied for the team lead in assists (4).
The story of the game, however, was the Flashes' defensive effort. Bowling Green generated 27 shots on the night, but the back line of Abby Breitschuh, Ava Todd, Kelsey Salopek, and Dalaney Ranallo limited the Falcons to just six on goal, all of which were saved by Sarah Melén. The defensive unit faced 11 Falcon corner kicks but stood strong all game, cutting out scoring chances and blocking shot after shot.
The Flashes were able to generate 17 shots themselves, seven of which were on goal. Arthur paced the squad with six shots, three on goal, and Josie Morgan took three shots herself.
