Wilfing Drives in Three Against Villanova on Sunday

SAN MARCOS, Texas. – Sophomore Abbie Wilfing concluded a stellar opening weekend at the plate with two hits and three RBIs as Kent State fell to Villanova, 13-5, in five innings in the final game at the Texas State Tournament.
The Golden Flashes (0-5) took an early lead, as Wilfing's single to left-center brought sophomore Delaney Robeson home from second base with two outs in the top of the first inning.
Villanova went ahead 3-1 on three triples and a walk in the bottom of the second. The Wildcats added one run in the third on a solo homer and two more in the fourth to make it 6-1.
Kent State finally got the big inning that eluded it all weekend in the top of the fifth. Following a leadoff groundout, Robeson doubled, and sophomore Savannah Wing walked to put two aboard for Wilfing, who hit a double to bring both home. Junior Jade Ramer and senior Julia Mazanec collected RBIs later in the frame to get within 6-5.
The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs on five hits, including a three-run homer for the walk-off victory.
Robeson joined Wilfing with her own two-hit performance while scoring a pair of runs.
Freshman Macy Irelan (0-2) got the start and was the only Flashes pitcher to record a strikeout. Irelan allowed three runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. Freshman Carley Penner made her Kent State debut in the circle in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Flashes will travel to Baltimore next weekend for two games each against Niagara and host UMBC.
