Bobcats Edge Flashes in Annual Grudge Match

ATHENS, OH- Kent State got victories from Jake Ferri, Jacob Houpt and Jacob Cover but the Bobcats won the annual grudge match, 28-9 inside the Convocation Center in Athens.
Friday night's dual started at 149 and led off with another instant classic. Alec Hagan and Kody Komara have met four times this season and each have been decided by one point or gone to sudden victory. Friday's match was the third of the season to go to extra time and Komara dropped a tough 3-1 decision.
Ohio would take control of the dual over the next four bouts, winning extra points in three of the four. Jacob Cover would earn his ninth win of the season on Friday and stopped the Ohio run with a 8-1 victory. Cover led 3-0 after the first two periods, then poured it on in the third with a five-point period to seal the victory.
Jake Ferri continued his strong season with a 3-2 grinder of a victory over Oscar Sanchez. After a scoreless first, Ferri scored an escape in the second to lead 1-0. Ferri used that advantage in a back-and-forth third to claim a 3-2 victory. Jacob Houpt would make it three decisions in a row for the Flashes with a 4-2 win over Paul Woo. Houpt would use a riding time edge heading into the third to his advantage and recorded an escape to start the third and break a 3-2 tie, the riding time bonus would pad his victory.
Kent State will stay on the road on Sunday, the second leg of a three-dual road trip. Next up are the Chippewas of Central Michigan. Sunday's dual is set for 2 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN 3.
