Flashes Finish Second at NIU Tri-Meet

KENT, Ohio – Senior Rachel DeCavitch won her second all-around crown in as many meets as the Kent State gymnastics team placed second at the NIU Tri-Meet on Saturday afternoon. Â
The Golden Flashes combined for a 195.025 team score, beating Simpson's 185.175 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Host Northern Illinois won meet with a 195.375.
DeCavitch tallied a 39.175 all-around score, topping three other all-around competitors.
The Flashes started the day out on bars, totaling a 48.450 team score. DeCavitch led the way for Kent State with a 9.800, finishing third overall in the event. Junior Sarah Haxton recorded a season-best 9.775 and senior Karlie Franz earned a 9.750 to open the meet, while senior Taylor Wentland continued her strong start to the year on the event, scoring 9.725.
On beam, sophomores Alyssa Guns and Grace Wehry both set new season-highs of 9.825 and 9.775, respectively. Haxton added a 9.750 as the Flashes combined for a 48.550 event total.
The Flashes posted a 49.425 on floor, their highest mark of the season on any event so far. Franz (9.925) and DeCavitch (9.900) both matched their personal-best scores, finishing second and third overall. Guns and junior Kennedy Weinpert each scored 9.875. Wehry (9.825) and senior Olivia Amodei (9.850) each set new season-highs with strong routines. The Flashes held a slim lead over the Huskies heading into the final rotation.
DeCavitch won the vault title with a 9.825 and was the only gymnast in the meet to eclipse the 9.800 mark. Franz and junior Kyndall Gilbert tied for second in the event with a score of 9.775. The Flashes totaled 48.600 on the final event, but NIU's 49.325 on floor was enough to take over first place.

NEXT UP
The Flashes will wrap up their short two-meet road trip on Saturday, February 11, when they travel to Bowling Green for a dual meet with the Falcons. The meet is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
