TULSA- Jake Ferri saw his run at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships come to an end on Thursday.
The graduate student battled in a pair of matches against top-10 competition, falling to the 10th seed Brandon Courtney of Arizona State by a 6-3 score and the seventh seeded Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State by an 11-6 margin.
Ferri, seeded 23rd in the tournament, faced Courtney in the opening round of the Championships. In a low-scoring contest, Ferri scrapped with the two-time All-American. Ferri earned a trio of escapes, one in each round against the Sun Devil, but a pair of takedowns, one in the first and another in the second proved to be just enough offense to edge the Golden Flash.
The Billerica, Massachusetts native got a tough draw in the wrestle backs as Brandon Kaylor was upset by 26th ranked Jack Wagner of North Carolina in the opening round. This match had a bit more tempo as the two wrestlers traded takedowns and escapes in the first two minutes. Kaylor scored a late takedown in the first period to lead 5-3 after the first three minutes. Ferri chose the down position in the second period and got the quick escape, Kaylor's third take down of the match and Ferri's third escape followed as the pair wrestled the second period to a 2-2 draw. In the third, Kaylor chose the down position, earned an escape and later his fourth takedown. Ferri worked the quick escape but couldn't find the equalizing offense and ran out of time.
Jake Ferri closes his Kent State career as a two-time national qualifier. His 106 career victories tie him for 16th all time at Kent State with head coach Jim Andrassy.
