Albany, NY – The 13th-seeded Kent State men's basketball team fell to fourth-seeded Indiana Hoosiers, 71-60, Friday in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament Midwest Region at the MVP Arena.
Through the first 20 minutes of action, the Golden Flashes were taking advantage of rebounds and creating second-chance points but struggled from the field. The Flashes outrebounded the Hoosiers 23-to-21 in the first half but only shot 26.3 percent from the field.
"I am very proud of this team," said head coach Rob Senderoff. "Nobody can sit here and watch the game and say those guys didn't compete. It just wasn't our night on the offensive end of the floor."
Sincere Carry was one of three Flashes to score in double-figures with a team-high 15 points. The Mid-American Conference Tournament MVP finished his career at Kent State leading the flashes offense averaging 17.7 ppg and totaling 329 assists at Kent State. Malique Jacobs wore his Kent State jersey for the last time, along with redshirt senior Miryne Thomas. Jacobs recorded eight points and a team-high nine rebounds while Thomas scored six points and had four rebounds. All three seniors were a major impact on the Flashes' historic season.
Chris Payton and VonCameron Davis chipped in double-digits with 10 points each to keep the Flashes in the game until the final buzzer. Despite the Flashes' efforts, the size of Indiana impacted shots close to the rim. Kent shot only 31.9 percent from the field while the Hoosier shots 46.8 percent.
Head Coach Rob Senderoff was emotional in the locker room expressing "We had a historic season. Keep your head up, you should all be proud of yourselves. We deserved to play in this game."
