ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Kent State had the potential tying run at the plate in both the fifth and sixth innings but was unable to record a timely hit during a 4-0 loss to host Michigan on Thursday.
The Golden Flashes (5-14) were led by junior Jade Ramer, who reached in all three of her plate appearances on two walks and a hit by pitch. Freshman Bri Despines reached twice on a pair of walks, while sophomores Delaney Robeson and Savannah Wing each recorded a hit.
The Wolverines struck early, as a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning was followed by a double to make it 1-0. Starting pitcher Anilese Kelly retired the next three batters to leave a runner stranded at third base, but Michigan added single runs in the second and third for a 3-0 lead.
Kent State loaded the bases without a hit in the top of the fifth, as a hit batter, fielding error and catcher's interference call brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Michigan pitcher Lauren Derkowski was able to record a strikeout to end the frame, however.
A muffed throw and walk put two aboard with two outs in the top of the sixth, but the Flashes were unable to bring a runner in again.
The Wolverines added a final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Kelly (2-4) tossed all six innings for Kent State and had five strikeouts while allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
The Flashes will begin Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series against Ball State on March 17-18.
