CLEVELAND - Karlie Franz was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Franz scored the first 10.000 by a Kent State gymnast since 2004 as part of a historic night at the Tennessee Collegiate Classic on Friday. Led by the graduate student, the Golden Flashes posted a program record score of 197.725, which has only been topped by four teams this season. The graduate student's perfect 10.000 on floor exercise is the first by a MAC gymnast in the event since 2005. Franz matched her career-high on her other event with a score of 9.875 on uneven bars.
Entering the week, Franz is tied for the national lead with a 9.950 floor average.Â
Franz is the first member of the Kent State gymnastics team to earn MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week this season. Franz graduated from Kent State last May but chose to return for her final year of eligibility this season and is pursuing her Master's degree in Public Health, sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA.
