KENT, Ohio- The Kent State soccer team took down the rival Akron Zips 1-0 on Thursday night at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes (7-5-3, 4-3-2 MAC) get a big result at home against the Zips (5-7-4, 0-7-2 MAC) are still seeking their first win in Mid-American Conference play. The Flashes make it two straight wins on Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium, they also make it four straight wins and 14 out of the last 15 against the school down the road.
The two teams would stay deadlocked at 0-0 for the entire first 45 minutes. The Flashes had a golden opportunity in the 10th minute when senior midfielder, Alisa Arthur, sent in a cross from a corner kick that found the foot of Kelsey Salopek but would be denied by the Zips goalkeeper at full extension. Kent State kept up the pressure firing 11 shots in the first 45 minutes with six of the being on goal.
The Flashes would break the tie in the 52nd minute when sophomore defender, Ava Todd, sent in a free kick from 40 yards out that took a bounce off an Akron defender and found its way into the back of the net. The goal is Todd's second on the season and for her collegiate career.
Kent State would keep up the offensive pressure firing nine more shots in the remaining 38 minutes of the game but could not find an insurance goal. The Flashes back line of Salopek, Todd, Ali Weibel, and Allison Collins did a good job limiting the quality of Akron's shots to just three in the box (one Blocked, one Saved, and one off-target.)
In the box score the Flashes dominated in shots (22-10), shots on goal (12-2), and corner kick opportunities (8-6). The Zips did hold and edge in the possession battle 57%-43%. Goalkeeper, Heidi Marshall, recorded two saves en-route to her fifth shutout on the season and fourth in MAC play.
