KENT- Golden Flashes sophomore Blake Schaffer has been named the lone alternate at 197 pounds in the upcoming NCAA Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, Missouri.
Schaffer is coming off a third-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships last weekend, hosted by Kent State. The sophomore went 4-2 at the Championships to earn the third-place honors. His only losses came to the conference's top-two seeds, Ben Smith of Cleveland State and Sam Mitchell of Buffalo, both are top-30 seeds in the championships.
The 197-pounder put together a strong season for the Flashes, going 6-2 in MAC duals this season and 25-11 overall on the campaign. The 25 wins are a team-high this season.
Should a spot open in the top-33 opening round, Schaffer would move into the bracket. The NCAA Championships take place in Kansas City from March 21-23.
