RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Kent State softball team defeated Manhattan, 4-1, on Sunday to sweep the host in the final non-conference weekend of the season.
The Golden Flashes (14-8) were led by the stellar pitching of freshman Ella Esterby and sophomore Macy Irelan. Esterby retired the first seven batters she faced and allowed just one unearned run over 3.2 innings. Irelan (5-4) recorded five strikeouts and kept the Jaspers hitless after entering with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to earn the victory.
Kent State started the scoring early with three runs in the top of the first. Graduate student Alexandria Whitmore hit a leadoff single and then stole second before scoring on a double by junior Savannah Wing. Sophomore Bri Despines followed with a walk, and both would score after three consecutive singles by graduate student Julia Mazanec, sophomore Carley Penner and sophomore Brynn Libler.
The Flashes added a final run in the top of the seventh. Senior Emily Lippe started with a single and her pinch runner was retired on a fielder's choice by Mazanec, who then scored on a two-out double by Libler.
Kent State will begin Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Ball State on March 22-23.
