KENT, Ohio – Head Coach Rob Senderoff and the Kent State men's basketball program announced the signing of Jamal Sumlin, or "Wopp" as many like to call him to the 2024 class on Wednesday afternoon.
Sumlin will have three years of eligibility with the Flashes after redshirting his freshman year at UTEP and making a stop at Northwest Florida State College. The Cleveland, Ohio native joins Deondre Jones, Jonas Nichols, Morgan Stafford, Anthony Morales, Cian Medley, and Marquis Barnett as the newest members of the Flashes.
The redshirt sophomore guard played in 33 games starting 26 while averaging 29.8 minutes per game in his first collegiate season. Wopp was named First-Team All-Panhandle Conference and Co-Player of the Year after averaging 10.2 points per game and shooting 46.7 percent from the field. The redshirt sophomore made himself known defensively averaging 4.5 rebounds per game.
"Wopp is someone we have known about since high school and is an ultra-competitive guy," Senderoff said. "He brings great tangibles and intangibles to the game. Wopp was the Co-Player of the Year in the Panhandle Conference, one of the country's best Junior College Conferences, and played for Steve DeMeo.We are excited for everything he will bring to the program as a defensive-minded player."
