TOLEDO, Ohio – Kent State scored the most runs against a Mid-American Conference opponent this season on Sunday and defeated host Toledo, 8-2, to take the final game of the series.
The Golden Flashes (19-14, 5-6 MAC) needed just seven hits and showed patience at the plate, drawing eight walks while striking out just once. Nine different players had either a hit or run scored.
Graduate student Julia Mazanec helped Kent State take control in the top of the second inning with a leadoff single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Senior Emily Lippe was walked, and pinch runner Sydney Shammo took second to place two in scoring position. A groundout to the right side by sophomore Brynn Libler allowed Mazanec to score the day's first run. With two outs, freshman Megan Claerhout was walked and then came around to score, along with Shammo, on a double by junior Delaney Robeson to make it 3-0.
That remained the score until the top of the sixth. After three straight walks helped push two runs across the plate, junior Savannah Wing ripped a two-run double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0.
Freshman Megan Nuechterlein (12-6) limited the Rockets to three hits over the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth and being replaced by freshman Ella Esterby. Nuechterlein recorded the victory and allowed two runs over 5.1 innings. Esterby was able to get out of a jam and left the bases loaded.
Sophomore Macy Irelan retired all three batters in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the win.
Kent State will host Western Michigan at Devine Diamond for a three-game series on April 12-13
