KENT – Kent State Men's Basketball (6-1) continued their winning ways on Saturday afternoon defeating regional rival Cleveland State University 91-71 to extend their winning streak to six. It was their second victory over the Vikings in seven days having last done so at The Greenbrier Tip-Off on Nov. 15. Five Flashes dropped double-digits as KSU allowed their fewest points on the season so far.
Jahari Williamson continued his hot streak from his first game with CSU with a pair of threes in the opening four minutes. The intensity remained high as the Golden Flashes and Vikings traded blows. Morgan Safford and Cian Medley kept Kent State in front with threes. With under 12 minutes to play in the first half the Flashes began to create separation. With 7:28 to play in the first Kent State went end-to-end with Dezmon Briscoe blocking a three before taking the go ahead pass from Delrecco Gillespie for the dunk at the opposite end of the floor. The Blue and Gold pushed their lead to 17 by the half leading 42-25. CSU opened the second half on a 7-3 run which quickly got Kent State's attention. They responded with a 20-9 run over the next six minutes that saw Quinn Woidke contribute from behind the arch. Gillespie also punctuated the highlight reel with a steal and fastbreak that he capped off with a windmill dunk. Medley stayed hot from downtown in the second half ultimately leading Kent State with 21 points all coming from three. Kent State built their cushion back to 20 before the final horn taking the 91-71 final.
The Box Score Story
Kent State's six straight wins surpasses their most recent win streak of this length when they won five straight in February of the 2024-2025 season. Medley's seven threes and 21 points are a season high for both. He was his highest number of three-pointers since Feb 14, 2025 against Ohio when he scored eight on his way to a KSU career high of 24 points. He is up to five double-digit games this season. Gillespie has now extended his double-double streak to seven out of seven games so far this season (12 points, 11 boards). He now stands alone leading the nation in double-doubles (7-7). Morgan Safford tallied 17 points for his sixth double-digit game of the season. He is up to 10 as a Golden Flash. Woidke racked up 13 points for his third double-digit performance while Williamson scored 12 for his second. Williamson combined for 35 points in KSU's two games against Cleveland State (23 and 12).
