KENT, Ohio โโย A group of Kent State Golden Flashes women student-athletes spent their Wednesday morning at Theodore Roosevelt High, ready to inspire the next generation of athletes.
The event featured four specialized discussion groups, each focusing on a different aspect of student-athlete life. Each Kent State student-athlete maintained their assigned topic throughout the rotations, speaking with a group of high school student-athletes during each 10-minute session.
"This was a perfect event to kick off during Women's History Month," said Kent State's Deputy Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator, Suzette McQueen. "Thank you to Ben Dunlap and staff for welcoming us, and I'm excited to see where our partnership can go with additional opportunities to engage with their students. Our student-athletes are great representatives of Kent State Athletics, and I appreciate the time they have taken to provide insight and advice."
Lauren Conroy (field hockey), Ava Todd (soccer), and Mya Babbitt (women's basketball) led conversations about mental health and self-care. They shared personal strategies for handling high-pressure situations, emphasizing the importance of decompressing outside of sports and developing positive self-talk habits.
In another group, Emma Rolston (field hockey), Davanee McNairy (lacrosse), and Dionna Gray (women's basketball) provided insights into the daily routine of Division I student-athletes. Their discussions centered on time management skills and balancing the demands of collegiate athletics.
The academic side of student-athlete life was covered by Delaney Robeson (softball), Abby Breitschuh (soccer), and Alison Utter (lacrosse). These Golden Flashes discussed their academic majors, strategies for balancing priorities, and preparing for life after sports.
The final group focused on leadership in sports, with Allie Lee (lacrosse), Tatiana Thomas (women's basketball), and Maddy Miklesh (softball). Their discussions highlighted women's sports' growing impact and visibility, personal leadership experiences, and influential role models shaping their athletic journeys.
Roosevelt High School students rotated through all four groups, giving them a comprehensive view of life as a collegiate student-athlete. The discussions prompted thoughtful questions and created meaningful connections between the high school and college athletes.
"This is a great first step in furthering the relationship between Kent State and Roosevelt Athletics," said Roosevelt High School's Athletic Director, Ben Dunlap. "It's great anytime we can put collegiate student-athletes in front of our student-athletes and let them listen to their stories. Many of our student-athletes aspire to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level, and I think that anytime we put our kids in front of their heroes, it's a great thing."
As the event concluded, the Kent State and Roosevelt High student-athletes gathered for photos, capturing a day filled with mentorship, inspiration, and the shared passion for athletics and academics that connects student-athletes across all levels of competition.
