Flashes Drop Series Finale versus Miami (OH) in Extra Innings
3/29/2026 4:53:00 PM | Baseball
KENT, Ohio – Kent State led 5-3 heading into the ninth inning Sunday before Miami (Ohio) scored five unanswered runs over the final two frames to leave with an 8-5 victory in ten innings at Schoonover Stadium. The Golden Flashes dropped the series two games to one and fell to 19-7 overall and 9-3 in MAC play.
Kent State struck first and built its lead methodically. Max Humphrey scored the opening run in the first on a Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe single, and the Flashes broke the game open in the second with a three-run frame highlighted by a two-RBI single from Humphrey and an opportunistic Luke Matthews steal of home to push the lead to 4-0. Sawyer Solitaria added an RBI single in the fourth to extend the advantage to 5-3 after Carson Raether and Dominic Krupinski home runs had trimmed the deficit for Miami (OH).
Ben Rabatin held the RedHawks in check through five innings before giving way to Evan Holewinski, who navigated three scoreless frames to keep Kent State's two-run lead intact entering the ninth.
Miami (OH) refused to go quietly. With two outs in the ninth, Tommy Harrison singled through the left side to score two runs and tie the game at five, sending the contest to extra innings.
In the tenth, the RedHawks loaded the bases against Caden Leonard and Nick Guidas before Marcus Dierks delivered the knockout blow, a two-run single to center that scored the go-ahead runs. A bases-loaded walk from Drew Phillips added insurance, and Miami left the inning with an 8-5 lead that Kent State could not overcome in the bottom half.
Humphrey finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. Ripken Reese went 2-for-4, and Brody Williams added two hits, including a double. Matthews reached base three times and scored a run.
Kent State returns to action Tuesday, March 31, with a 3 p.m. home contest against Baldwin Wallace at Schoonover Stadium.
