TOLEDO, Ohio – Evan Holewinski tossed four scoreless innings in relief, and an eighth-inning error opened the door for the go-ahead run, as Kent State edged Toledo, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at Scott Park. The Golden Flashes improved to 39-12 overall and 23-8 in MAC play.
Brody Williams put Kent State on top early with a two-run home run to right in the first inning, scoring Luke Matthews, who had doubled and stolen third. The Rockets answered with a single run in the third before Brady Marshall's RBI single in the fourth gave the Flashes a 3-1 lead. Toledo responded as Troy Sudbrook's two-run double up the middle in the fourth tied it up, setting the stage for a tense finish. The go-ahead run came in the eighth when a pair of Toledo errors on third baseman Troy Sudbrook allowed Sawyer Solitaria and then Alejandro Covas to advance, with Solitaria eventually scoring the unearned winning run.
Easton Tumis worked through five innings before Holewinski took over and was untouchable to improve to 4-0. Williams finished 1-for-4 with two RBI while Matthews, Covas, and Solitaria each contributed to the offense. Kent State swiped four bases on the afternoon with Matthews, Covas, Ripken Reese, and Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe all recording steals.
Kent State and Toledo play game two of the series tomorrow at Scott Park, first pitch at 3 p.m.
