AKRON, Ohio – Evan Holewinski tossed 5.1 shutout innings in relief, and a five-run seventh inning turned a two-run deficit into a victory, as Kent State defeated rival Akron, 8-4, Saturday afternoon at Skeeles Field. The Golden Flashes improved to 33-11 overall and 18-7 in MAC play.
Brody Williams launched a two-run home run in the first inning to give Kent State an early 2-0 lead, but Akron answered with four runs across the second and third innings, capped by home runs from Brody Chrisman and Easton Amundson in the third to take a 4-2 advantage. Easton Tumis exited after 3.2 innings, and Holewinski came on and gave up no runs and struck out six to earn his third win of the season.
Kent State added an unearned run in the sixth to make it a one-run game, then erupted for five in the seventh to put it away. Hunter Klotz and Ripken Reese set the table, and Williams followed with an RBI single to tie the game. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe then singled to center and raced to second on the throw, plating two more, before Alejandro Covas delivered a two-run double to right center to cap the rally. Williams finished 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Rienstra-Kiracofe went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Covas added two hits and two RBI.
Kent State returns to action Sunday, May 3, in a doubleheader at Akron beginning at 11 a.m. A Golden Flashes win in either game would clinch a spot in the MAC Tournament.
