Burrell McGhee, Jr., 1985
KSU CAREER: Is the all-time leading scorer in Kent State men‘s basketball history with 1,710 points…The only player in KSU history to be named first team all Mid-American Conference three times…Hold 13 Golden Flash hoop records…Finished career by scoring in double figures 68 consecutive times…Was 12thin the nation in scoring during the 1977-78 season, averaging 21.9 ppg…Honorable mention All-American in 1977-78…Became only the third KSU player to lead the MAC in scoring…Was one of the most exciting players ever to step onto the court at Kent State…Thrilled Flash fans with his scoring heroics and many times pulled off impossible shots in the waning moments of a contest to give Kent a victory…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Warred Western Reserve High School in 1974…Was selected to the All-Big Eight, All-District, All-Regional, and Class AAA All-Ohio Player-of-the-Year as a senior…Earned six varsity letters in high school in basketball, football, and track…Played in the prestigious Dapper Dan Roundball Classic…POST KSU CAREER: Selected to several All-Tournament teams…Nominated to play in the Pizza Hit Classical as a senior at Kent…PERSONAL: Born on February 7, 1955, in Warren, Ohio…Died July 17, 1981…Majored in Physical Education at KSU…The Kent State sports community was shocked by his untimely death…He remains one of the most prominent names in Kent State basketball history.
Eugene Richard (Stick) Michael, 1985
KSU CAREER: Lettered in baseball and basketball at Kent State…One of the smoothest fielding shortstops in KSU history, played for Moose Paskert and Matt Resick…Teamed with another ex-Major Leaguer and KSU Hall of Famer Rich Rollins…Also ran cross country for KSU…Michael was equally adept on the basketball court and the baseball diamond, and was the Flashes leading scorer in 1957-58 averaging 14.0 points per game…A capable shooter and excellent ballhandler…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Akron East High School in 1955…Lettered four times each in baseball and basketball for the Orientals…Was an All-Ohio pick in baseball and earned All-City and All-District honors in basketball…POST KSU CAREER: Was offered a chance to play basketball with the New York Knicks but opted for baseball instead…Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates…Let Northern League shortstops in double plays in 1959 with 87 and again in 1960 with 90…Also led Southern League with 85 DP’s in 1961 and the International League with 78 in 1965…Made his major league debut with the Pirates in 1966…Closed out his major league playing career in 1976 after playing for the Dodgers, Yankees, Tigers, and Red Sox…Returned to the Yankees front office and was named manager of the Columbus Clippers, the Yanks’ AAA farm club…Led Clippers to the International League Championship in 1979…Served as the General Manager of the Yankees in 1980 and was named to succeed Dick Howser as the manager of the Bronx Bombers in 1981…PERSONAL: Born in Kent of June 2, 1938…Received his B.S. degree in education from KSU in 1967…Elected to the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 1980…Is the father of three children (a daughter and two sons).
Leslie David Moore, 1985
KSU CAREER: One of the finest swimmers ever at Kent State, Les was the first All-American swimmer in KSU history…Was selected by the College Swimming Coaches of America to the All-American Collegiate Team in both the 100 and 200 - yard backstroke in 1967, 1969, and 1970…Swam the first of the 800 – yard freestyle relay team that won the MAC title in 1970… Held freshman, varsity, and pool records in both backstrokes during his time at Kent, along with varsity records in the 500 and 1,000 – yard freestyles…Also was a member of three record-setting relays for the Flashes…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1965…Four-Year letterman in swimming in high school who was talented enough to swim for varsity as a Freshman…All-America as a sophomore, junior, and senior…Won Pennsylvania state
Championships in the 100 – yard backstroke in 1964 and 1965…POST KSU CAREER: After graduation, Moore was a coach at the Greater Pittsburgh Swim Club for two years…Then moved on to coach at John F. Kennedy High School in Taylor, Michigan, for four years, helping to establish the program there…PERSONAL: Born on July, 4, 1947, in Erie, Pennsylvania…Earned a B.S. degree in education from KSU in 1971…Presently is a salesman for Welded Rings Products Company in Cleveland…Enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing golf…He and his wife, the former Linda Janosek, have three daughters.
Herbert Page, 1985
KSU CAREER: Received eight varsity letters in three sports…Four-year letterman in golf and two each in football and hockey…Played in every varsity match and tournament for the Flash golf team during his four seasons…Team co-captain as a senior…Helped lead Flashes to second place MAC finish in 1971 and 1974…One of KSU’s finest kickers in football…Played on Don James’ 1972 MAC championship team and in the Tangerine Bowl that year…Made 33 or 38 extra points both season school records, and eight of twelve field goals in 1972…Also had records of six out of seven extra points one game…In hockey, he was a starter on the first KSU hockey club team – the “Clippers”…Selected “Clipper-of-the- Year” in 1971…Top five in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Markham District High School in Markham, Ontario, Canada, in 1969…Lettered in basketball and golf…POST KSU CAREER: Member of the All-MAC Academic football team…MAC Scholar Athlete in 1974, George Altmann Award winner in 1974…Drafted by the British Columbia Lions as place kicker…Akron District Amateur Golf Champion…1974 Canadian Amateur top 20…As a professional golfer, he has won several tournaments and in 1983 was selected by Sports Illustrated as the PGA Merchandiser-of the-Year in the public Golf Course Category…Chosen MAC golf co-coach of the year in both 1983 and 1984…Led KSU to MAC title and a 24th place finish in the NCAA…PERSONAL: Born in Ontario, Canada on March 16, 1951…Graduated Cum Laude from KSU in 1974 and earned his M.A. degree in physical education from KSU in 1976…Member of the Blue Key National Honor Society and National Physical Education Honor Society…Currently the head professional at Windmill Lakes Golf Club…Married the former Paula Treckel…Currently resides in Ravenna.
Richard (Moose) Paskert, 1985
KSU CAREER: Earned varsity letters in football, baseball, and swimming…Lettered three times each in baseball and football and captained the Flash diamond squad…Also served as assistant football coach for 18 years, coached freshman swimming for nine years…Led Kent in hitting average with .346 average in 1947…Remained at KSU as a coach and faculty member for more than 30 years…Coached the Flash baseball team to its only MAC title in 1964…Served as baseball coach for 23 years, ten as head coach (1962-71)…Coached five players to the Major Leagues…Probably the most well-known figure in Kent State athletic history, Moose is a walking record book and encyclopedic on KSU sports…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from John Marshals High School in 1938…Was a three-sport letterman as a prep, earning monograms in baseball, basketball, and football…POST KSU CAREER: Has been instrumental in preserving Kent athletic history…The “Hall of Fame” and pictorial history photos displays in Memorial Gym are largely attributed to his efforts…Active in Varsity “K” as an officer and member for over 30 years…Former Director of Ticket Sales and Promotions for KSU Athletic Department…Former territorial scout for the Cleveland Indians…PERSONAL: Born on June 25, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio…Received his B.A. degree in physical education from KSU in 1949 and his M.A. degree in 1951…Member of Sigma Nu and Delta Phi Sigma and Phi Epsilon Kappa…Portage County Coaches and Umpires Association member…Selected as Kent “Citizen-of-the-Year” in 1980…President of Kent Kiwanis Club…Founder and past president of the Portage County Sports Hall of Fame…Also associated with Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame…Despite retirement, Moose continues to be active in numerous projects in and around Kent State…Has six children…Currently resides in Kent.
Joseph (Spooky) Price, 1985
KSU CAREER: Was an outstanding three-year letterman in basketball at Kent State…One of the finest ballhandlers to don a KSU uniform, “Spooky” led the Flashes in scoring during his junior and senior seasons…Was selected to the All-Conference first team and All-State team as a senior (as selected by UPI)…His Kent State coach, G.Donald (Rosy) Starn rated price as, “the greatest passer to ever play on the hardwood for the Blue and Gold”…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Sharon High School (Sharon, PA) in 1938…Lettered three times in basketball as a prep and was selected to All-Conference and All-State teams…POST KSU CAREER: Following his career, Price played for the Buhl Club amateur team which claimed the Western Pennsylvania basketball title…They faced such formidable foes as the House of David and the New York Celtics, and were asked to enter the National Professional Basketball League…Also coached basketball at Brush High School in Lydhurst for six years…PERSONAL: Born on February 3, 1918, in Farrell, Pennsylvania…Earned his degree in Education from Kent State…Was a member of the Physical Education Club and Delta Phi Sigma…He served as a glider pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II and earned five battle stars…Achieved the rank of 2nd Lt…His unit received the Presidential Unit Citation…Former owner and president of the J. Price Company, manufacturers representatives…Enjoys golf, tennis, fishing, and sailing and was a member of the Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville…Married to the former Beverly Frozio of Willoughby…The couple has one daughter…Retired as the president of his own company in Hartville.
Arthur Robert (Sty) Steiskal, 1985
KSU CAREER: Lettered 12 times at Kent, earning three monograms each, in football, track, and wrestling (1928, 1929, 1930), two in baseball (1930, 1931) and one in basketball (1928)…Was the Ohio State collegiate wrestling champ at 175 pounds in 1930 and at heavyweight in 1931…Played fullback and linebacker on the gridiron, guard in basketball…Returned to KSU following graduation to train for the 1932 Olympic wrestling trials…Earned an alternate spot on the U.S. team at 191 pounds…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Westlake High School in 1927…Earned letters in football, basketball, and track as a prep…Led his football and basketball teams to two championships and captained both teams…Placed second in the state in the mile in 1926…POST KSU CAREER: Coached basketball, football, and track at Leetonia (Oh.)
