Cedric Brown, 1986
KSU CAREER: Two-time all Mid-American Conference first team selection at safety…Named to All-MAC second team as a sophomore as well…Unanimous first team selection as a junior…Earned honorable mention All-American honor (AP) as a senior…Led the nation with eight interceptions in eight games as a senior…Earned four varsity letters…Selected as a captain his senior season…Kent’s MVP on defense as a senior…Was recruited by Don James as a quarterback but quickly made the transition to defensive back and saw action as a freshman…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Columbus Linden-McKinley High School where he earned six varsity letters in baseball, basketball, and football…Was selected to All-City and All-District squads in football and was also an All-City selection in baseball…Was a pitcher and outfielder on the diamond…Starred as quarterback as a prep…POST KSU CAREER: Selected by the Oakland Raiders in the 12th round of the 1976 draft…Signed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent in 1977…Selected as Buc’s MVP in 1981…Also named as the teams’ most underrated player by the Tampa Tribune…Selected to Football Digest’s All-Rookie team in 1977…Had 29 careers interceptions entering the 1985 season, Tampa Bay record holder…Posted more than 500 career tackles…Had career high 12 tables on four occasions…Led NFC with nine interceptions in 1981…Retired from professional football…PERSONAL: Born in Columbus, Oh. Robert W. (Buck) Hein, 1986
KSU CAREER: Earned 8 Varsity “K’s” in three sports during his collegiate career…Lettered three times each in basketball and track, 1941-1943, and captained each team as well…Earned two varsity monograms in football while at Kent State…Was NEO Heavyweight runner-up as a grappler in 1941…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Cleveland’s John Adams High School in 1939…POST KSU CAREER: Played football for the El Toro Marines in 1944 and 1945 while serving in the U.S. Marine corps…Entered the professional football ranks as a member of the Chicago Rockets in the old All-American Conference…Was injured during his rookie season, 1947…Taught and coached at Kent State High School…PERSONAL: Born on February 6, 1921 in Cleveland, Oh…Married the former Ruth Ericson…They have three daughters, Lindsay, Miriam, and Joanne…Was a member of the Varsity “K” and Blue Key Clubs at KSU…U.S. Marine Corps Captain…Member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shrine and Lions Club…Active in United Methodist Church…Currently Executive Director the Methodist Evangelical Hospital Foundation.
Kenneth H. Koenig, 1986
KSU CAREER: Participated in both wrestling and football at Kent State…Was Mid-American Conference champion three consecutive years, 1957-59…Compiled an impressive 25-1-1 dual meet record during his career…Holds MAC record for least points scored against in tournament competition…In three MAC tourneys only one point was scored against him…Had least number of total losses, including tournaments and dual meets, during his junior and senior seasons (2 losses) combined…Two-time champion in the 4-1 tournament…Placed first one and second once in A.A.U. Tournament…Lost only six matches during his entire KSU career…Teamed with Frank Fiore and Clarence McNaii to give Kent one of its best wrestling squads ever…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Cleveland’s West Tech. High School in 1955…As a prep he was a member of athletic teams in football, wrestling, and track…POST KSU CAREER: Was a member (alternate) of the 1961 United State World championship Wrestling Team…Turned to coaching following his competitive career…Guided wrestling squads for : University High School, Columbus, Brooklyn High School, Northern Michigan University and Appalachian State University…Nominated for NCAA College Division Coach of the Year…Coached seven NCAA divisional place winners and one NCAA championship…Has been a speaker and clinician at numerous wrestling clinics throughout the United States…Is a member of many wrestling organization including: National Wrestling Coaches Association, U.S. Wrestling Foundation, A.A.U., and several officiating associations…PERSONAL: Born May 7, 1937 in Cleveland, Oh…Is married, he and wife Gretchen have two children, Mark and Gail…Earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from KSU in 1959…Also received a B.S. in education from Ohio State in 1966…Received his master’s in education from the University of Akron in 1969…Currently is the Director of Intramurals for the University of Akron.
Pierson (Pete) Lorandeau, 1986
KSU CAREER: Cross country and track standout for the Flashes earning 12 varsity letters…All-American selection in both sports, placing sixth in cross country in 1964 and ninth in 1965 as well as finishing fifth in the six mile event in outdoor track in 1965…Captained the cross country team in both his junior and senior seasons…MAC CC champ in 1964…1965 New Hampshire Athlete of the Year…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Lettered in track and cross country…State CC champion…Placed 2nd in the New England’s CC meet (comprising runners from each of the New England stated) also placed 3rd in the mile…New Hampshire State Mile Champion in outdoor track…1963 graduate of Monadnock Regional High School in Swazey Center, NH…POST KSU CAREER: Coach at Firelands High School where he guided his team to a second place district finish and was undefeated in dual meet competition his first year as coach…Coached Firelands first two state meet competitors…Competed in road races and was named the Outstanding Athlete in New Hampshire Road race competition…PERSONAL: Born October 8, 1944 in Keene, New Hampshire…Married the former Nina Hunter, also a KSU graduate, who earned her bachelor’s degree from Kent in 1970 and her Med in 1972…They have two children: Pierson “Pete” and Amy Leigh…Owns a construction company.
Don McCafferty, 1986
KSU CAREER: Joined the Golden Flashes staff in the summer of 1949…Coached ends and linemen under Trevor Rees…Remained with the Flash gridiron staff for 11 seasons and was a member of one of Kent’s most illustrious coaching staffs which included Rees, Frank Smouse, Rick Forzano, and “Moose” Paskert…One of the most respected and well-liked coaches in KSU history…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Cleveland Rhodes High School…POST KSU CAREER: Moved on to coach in the National Football League joining the staff on the Baltimore Colts under head coach Weeb Ewback in 1959…Was the offensive backfield coach for the Colts under Don Shula, 1963-69…Became the head coach of the Colts in 1970…Guided the Colts to the Super Bowl Championship in 1970…Named head coach of the Detroit Lions late in 1972 and coached them in 1973 compiling a 6-7-1 record…Well respected among his coaching peers and players as well…Don Shula said of his former assistant “Mac made a lot of lasting friends. He was a fine football man, but more important, a fine man.”…He knows the pro game like Einstein”, said Rick Forzano…Browns owner Art Modell described Mac by saying, “Of the many great men who have figured prominently in the strong structure of the NFL, Don McCafferty will always rank near the top as a man, as a coach, and most importantly, as a human being.”…COLLEGIATE CAREER: Played at Ohio State under Paul Brown, 1941 & 1942…Member of the Buckeye’s National Championship team of ’42 9-1 record…Graduated from OSU in 1947…Earned his M.Ed from Kent State in 1952…PERSONAL: Born March 12, 1921…Died on July 28, 1974…Played professional football with the New York Giants for one year…Career shortened by a serious knee injury…Prior to coming to Kent State he worked in the Cleveland Recreation and wife, June, had four children.
Clarence McNair, 1986
KSU CAREER: All-American wrestler for the Flashes in 1959…Placed fourth in NCAA at 130 pounds…Compiled a dual meet record of 25-1-1 during three seasons…Teamed with fellow Hall of Famers Frank Fiore and Ken Koeing to give Kent a formidable lineup…Lost only six times…Placed first in Mid-American Conference Tournament twice and second once…Three time champion in 4-1 tournament and twice was crowned Lake Erie A.A.U. Champion…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Attended Akron East High School…PERSONAL: Born August 18, 1937 in Port St. Joe, FL…He and his wife Janice have three children: Dareerl, Harriet, and Jakkire.

KSU CAREER: Earned three varsity letters for the Flash football team, 1950-52…Selected as outstanding freshman during the 1949 season…Played right guard…Was Kent’s first All-American in football, selected to the International News Service first team in 1952…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Attended New High School and graduated in 1949…Received two varsity letters on the gridiron and was selected to the All-Conference first team as a senior…PERSONAL: Born in New Philadelphia, Oh. On June 11, 1931…Attended KSU where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1953 with a dual major in political science and pre-law…Received his doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Colorado in 1968…While at Kent he was one of the founding members of Kappa Alpha Psi…Former mayor of Boulder, Colorado…Also served that city as a city councilman…Director of Human Relations at Colorado State University, 1970-72…Currently working in private law practice, Trimble, Tate, and Nulan, in Denver…Spent 14 years in the U.S. military as an artillery officer…Achieved the rank of captain…Married the former Ellen Cooper…They have four children, Penfield III, Paula, Gail, and Roslyn.
