Jacques Accambray, 1988
KSU CAREER: Earned four Varsity “K’s” in track for the Flashes (1971-74) and also played football during his sophomore year…A seven-time All-American in track, three times indoor (35-pound weight) and four time outdoor (hammer)…Won two hammer titles in MAC (1973-74) and NCAA (1971 & 73)…Captured 1972 NCAA indoor title in 35-pound weight…Also won MAC shot put title in 1973…Teamed with Al Schoterman to give Kent an imposing 1-2 punch in weight events, the pair placed one-two in four NCAA championships…Joined Gerald Tinker and Teddy Harris to form a three-man team at the 1973 NCAA Track Championships and propelled Kent to a second-place finish, the highest ever for a Kent team…POST KSU CAREER: Member of the French Olympic Team in the hammer throw…Coaching a team, the Dolphins, in the French football Federation…PERSONAL: Born on May 23, 1950 in Division, France…Earned his B.A. from Kent in 1974 in Business Administration…Returned to his homeland and is currently the Director of the French Football Federation League Board…Joins his former coach, Doug Raymond, as one of this year’s inductees.

KSU CAREER: The premier female athlete in Kent State history…Earned seven Varsity “K’s”, four in basketball and three in tennis…Is the all-time leading scorer (men and women) in KSU basketball history with 2,071 points…Three-time team MVP (1980-83)…Kodak All-Region team selection as a junior and senior…At one time held three KSU records…Team captain as a senior…Is the only woman in KSU history to have uniform number (#13) retired…Was selected most improved player as a frosh (tennis) and “Rookie of the Year” in basketball…MVP of tennis team…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: An outstanding athlete who lettered 11 times in three sports: four times each in basketball and track and three times in tennis…1978 graduate of Struthers High School…Chosen Ohio AAA MVP as a senior…Associated Press and UPI Player of the Year…Parade All-American Team (Honorable Mention) 1978…All-Steel Valley pick in track…POST KSU CAREER: Has continued her interest in athletics by participating in basketball and softball leagues as well as playing in amateur tennis tournaments…PERSONAL: Born on June 25, 1960 in Westpoint, NY…Earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1982…Owner of her won business…Enjoys sports including; basketball, tennis, horseback riding & jumping, water skiing, aerobics, and weight lifting.
Harry Gilcrest, 1988
KSU CAREER: Earned three varsity “K’s” in football for the Flashes from 1934-36…Played center…Captain of the team as a senior…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1930 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School…Earned varsity letters in football and track for the Riders…POST KSU CAREER: Began coaching in 1936 with Eaton School in Lorain County…Also coached for Charlestown (1937-38) and Aurora (1938-43) before moving to Ravenna where he coached football, basketball, and track…An outstanding football coach known for his innovative offensive game plans…One of the top archers in the U.S. as well…Captained the U.S. archer team at the World Championships in the Netherlands and at Valley Forge, PA…A member of the board of the United States Archery Association and helped to formulate the Olympic archery rules…Taught archery at several Kent branch campuses…Ravenna High School’s “Gilcrest Stadium” is named in his honor…PERSONAL: Born on December 14, 1911 in Kenmore…A teacher for 40 years and an avid musician for more than 50 years…Married to the former Thelma Bulger…They have three children…Currently serves as a probation officer and counselor for the Portage County Juvenile Court…A charter inductee in the Portage County Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
George Janik, 1988
KSU CAREER: An outstanding catcher for the Kent baseball team…Was twice selected to the All-MAC first team as a catcher 1954-55…Injury prevented him from receiving a third first-team berth…Known for his defensive ability and his skill at handling pitchers…Earned letters in baseball in 1953-56…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1948 graduate of Cleveland South High School where he lettered in baseball as a junior and senior…POST KSU CAREER: Played baseball in the Cleveland Industrial A League for Knapp Wines and Telco Tool…PERSONAL: Born on September 3, 1930 in Massillon, Oh…Served in the United States Navy 1949-50…Earned his bachelors degree in speech and history from Kent State in 1956…Member of the Sigma Nu fraternity…Served on the KSU Board of Trustees from 1957-87…Member of the Cleveland Commission of High Education…Recently retired from the IBM Corporation and is currently serving as the Goodyear Executive Professor in the College of Business at Kent State University…Married to the former Nellie Lou Williams…They have two children, Lisa and Greg.
Richard A. Mostardi, 1988
KSU CAREER: Earned four Varsity “K’s” in football (3) and track (1) under coach Trevor Rees and Jay Fischer from 1958-60…Chosen All-MAC quarterback in 1958 (first team) and 1959 (second team)…Selected team MVP and captain as a senior in 1960…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania in 1956…Earned varsity letters three times each in football and basketball as a prep…An All-State selection in football and basketball in 1955 and 1956…Was team captain and MVP of each sport as a senior…POST KSU CAREER: Played professional football for the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, and Oakland Raiders from 1960-62…PERSONAL: Born on July 1, 1938 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania…Earned his BA from KSU in 1960, majoring in biology and physical education…Also received his M.Ed from Kent in 1964 and his PhD in physiology from Ohio State in 1968…Served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves…Currently a professor of biology at the University of Akron and the Director of Patient Research fro the Musculo-Skeletal Lad, Akron City Hospital…Member of the American Physiological Society and the Ohio Academy of Science…Has four children: Dana, Greg, Kara, and Rick.
Walter S. Porowski, 1988
KSU CAREER: An All-American wrestler who was the NCAA runner-up at heavyweight in 1942…Was the 4-1 Champion at heavyweight in 1941…Earned three Varsity “K’s” as a grappler…Also lettered in football (1939-41) and track (1940-42) for Kent…Joins Hall of Famer Mike Slepecky as the highest finishers ever in the NCAA for Kent…Placed third in the 1937 national A.A.U. championships…Won three consecutive Lake Erie A.A.U. championships 1940, 1941, 1942…Placed second in the shot put at All-Ohio championships as a senior…Earned second-team All-Ohio Football honors as a junior and was selected to the All-Ohio first-team by the Associated Press…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A graduate of Cleveland South High School…Earned letters in football and wrestling and was a state mat champion as a prep…Earned all-city and all-state honors as a senior…POST KSU CAREER: Coached at Perry High School…PERSONAL: Born on June 27, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio…Died on April 11, 1974…Earned his bachelor’s degree from Kent State in physical education and industrial arts in 1942 and pursued a master’s degree in education…He and his wife, Dorothy, had three children…His son, Jim, will accept his induction plaque.
Douglas L. (Doug) Raymond, 1988
KSU CAREER: Served as the head track and cross country coach at Kent for 18 years (1960-78)…Guided the Flashes to two MAC track titles (1973 & 75)…Selected as MAC Coach of the Year two times…Coached the 1973 indoor track team to a second place finish in the NCAA championships…Coached 14 Kent athletes to All-American status and 29 individuals MAC titles…His charges were awarded All-American status 34 times and three, Jacques Accambray, Al Schoterman, and Gerald Tinker, were members of the Olympic team…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Graduated from Beverly High School in Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1933…State champ in 880 and was undefeated in his last years of high school…POST KSU CAREER: Retired from KSU in 1978, still enjoys golfing…PERSONAL: Born June 19, 1915…Earned his B.A. and M/Ed from Boston University…Was a track standout in college and was undefeated in dual meet competition in the 440 and 880 and national AAU champ in the 600 meters…Also coached track at Boston University and won seven consecutive New England Intercollegiate Championships…Coach of 1956 U.S. Olympic Team and 1969 American Team at the Pacific Conference Championships…Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII…Inducted into the Ohio Track & Field Associations Hall of Fame in 1987…Married the former Mary Dowling (now divorced) they had five children.
William (Bill) Sudeck, 1988
KSU CAREER: An outstanding four-year letterwinner (1945-48) on the Golden Flash basketball squad…Selected to the All-Ohio team as a freshman…At one time he held five KSU scoring records including most points (game, season, and career) best FG percentage and best FT percentage…A four-year starter and team captain as a senior…Won the Manchester Cup Award in 1945…HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Lettered in both basketball (2) and baseball (1) at Alliance High School…Graduated in 1944…Selected All-County in basketball as a senior…POST KSU CAREER: Played AAU basketball for Joe’s All Star Café, a top-notch Akron team…Has served as the head basketball, cross country, and track coach at Case Western Reserve University since 1954…Selected as the PAC-NCAC cross country Coach of the Year 13 times, track Coach of the Year 10 times…Has coached CWRU to more than 200 basketball victories and more that 600 combined wins in all three sports…A former member of the United States Olympic Basketball Committee…President of the Ohio Cross Country Coaches Association…A certified football and basketball official for 40 years…PERSONAL: Born on January 17, 1926 in York, Pennsylvania…Received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Kent State in 1948 and his M.Ed. from Kent in 1956…Member of Sigma Nu fraternity…Member of the NCAA Coaches Association for basketball, track, and cross country…OHSAA Football and Basketball Officials Association…Enjoys reading, golf, and squash…Has one daughter, Susan.
