Fred “Chip” Breidenbach, 1991
HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1974 graduate of Hudson High School…Earned 7 varsity letters: in track & field (3), football (3), and wrestling…Suburban League discus champion three times (1972-71); district champ 1974; state qualifier in both his junior and senior seasons…Earned All-League second team honors in football as a senior…KSU CAREER: Earned eight varsity “K’s” in indoor and outdoor track under Doug Raymond…Two time Mid-American Conference hammer throw champ (1977-78)…MAC 35-pound weight throw champ (indoor) in 1976 & 1978…Two-time NCAA All-American (1976 & 1978)…Set MAC 35-pound weight throw mark that still stands (62’ 8 ½ “)…Member of the 1975 USA Junior AAU Track & Field education…PERSONAL: Born March 10, 1956 in Akron, Ohio…Nicknamed “Chip”…Following graduation was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and its subsidiary, Reneer Films Corp…Currently serving as the Sales and Marketing Manager for Pioneer Electronics in Pomona, California…He and his wife, Patricia, are the parents of a baby boy, Fred Breidenbach III.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: 1963 graduate of Cleveland Holy Name High School…KSU CAREER: Nicknamed the U.S.S. Brooks because of his size and quickness…Tipped the scales at nearly 270 pounds as a senior…A unanimous All-Mid-American Conference pick as a junior and a first teamer as a senior as well…Earned three Varsity “K’s” (1964-66)…All conference at both the offensive guard and tackle positions…An Honorable Mention All-America choice in 1965…Played in the College All Star Game in Chicago following his senior season…Coach Leo Strang called Brooks, “the finest lineman I’ve ever coached.” (1965 Kent Press Guide)…1966 press guide called him “one of the four best blockers in the nation.”…Also served as the Flashes’ place kicker and set school records for most extra points in a game with six, and most field goal attempts in a game with three…Recorded Kent’s longest field goal on record, 43 yards, against Ohio University as a senior (since broken)…POST KSU CAREER: Was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1967 as their second pick and 44th overall.
Kathy Calo, 1991
HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1979 graduate of York High School in Long Sands Road, York, Maine…Earned nine varsity letters in track & field (3); basketball (3); field hockey (2); and softball (1)…Three-time state champion in the javelin…KSU CAREER: Four-time Mid-American Conference javelin champ for the Lady Flash track team (1980-83)…All-American selection in the javelin in 1983…Set javelin record at the prestigious Penn Relays in 1982 in winning the event…Captured the javelin championship at the Dogwood Relays in 1982 as well…Received her undergraduate degree in physical education in 1983 and earned her Master Teacher of Physical Education Certification in 1986…POST KSU CAREER: Placed fifth in the 1984 United States Olympic Trials in the javelin…Continues to be active in softball…PERSONAL: Born November 8, 1960 in York, Maine…Full name is Kathy Lynn Calo…Currently serving as a physical education teacher in the Wells, Maine school system where she also coaches track & field and basketball at the high school and junior high school, respectively.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1950 graduate of Cleveland West Technical High School where he lettered in football…KSU CAREER: Earned three Varsity “K’s” on the gridiron for coach Trevor Reese in 1951, ’52, and ’53…Selected to the All-Mid American Conference First Team as a tackle in 1952 and 1953…All Ohio Collegiate team choice in 1953…Earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1955 and his master’s degree in 1962 from Kent…POST KSU CAREER: Drafted by the then Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League and retired following the 1954 season due to an injury…Continued his education and earned his PhD from Syracuse in 1976…Taught in the Cleveland School System at Cleveland East Tech, Cleveland Heights, and Warrensville Heights and in the New Jersey Public School System at Wall Township…PERSONAL: Was born on September 16, 1932 in Washington D.C….Was honorable discharged from the United States Army in 1956…Is currently the Associate Dean of the Teacher’s College of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska…He and his wife Audrey have six children, Michael, Mark, Daniel, Michelle, Patricia, and Kathleen…He enjoys officiating wrestling.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1939 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School where he earned eight varsity letters in basketball (3), baseball (3), and football (2)…Helped his team to the league title in basketball as a senior and was All-Western Reserve League pick that year…Also earned All-City honors in baseball as a senior…KSU CAREER: Served as the head coach of the Golden Flashes in 1948-51 and Assistant Athletic Director in 1955-56…Guided the Flashes to their first ever 20-win season in 1948-49 when Kent posted a 20-8 record…Led Kent to a 71-49 (.592) overall mark during his tenure…Guided the Flashes to their best winning percentage (.818) with an 18-4 mark in 1949-50…PERSONAL: Earned his degree in physical education and history from Muskingham College in 1943 and his Master’s Degree in Health and Physical Education from Ohio State University in 1951…Lettered nine times as a collegian, three each in basketball, baseball, and football…Captained the football team as a senior and was an All-Ohio pick in basketball as a senior…Served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater…Is currently the owner of M&M Sales Company of Thousand Oaks, California…he is a member of Kiwanis International, American Management Association, and the Westlake village Chamber of Commerce…He and his wife, Jane, have two sons, David and Daniel.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1950 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School in Youngstown…Earned varsity letters in football and track in 1948-50…Was a member of the All-County team in football…KSU CAREER: Played for the Flashes from 1950-53 and earned three Varsity “K’s”…Named outstanding freshman in 1950…All-Ohio and All-MAC first team pick as a sophomore…All-MAC second team member during his junior and senior seasons and All-Ohio as a junior…Played tackle for coach Trevor Rees and was team captain as a senior…Received his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts in 1954 and his Master of Education degree in1960…POST KSU CAREER: Drafted by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL as their 16thpick in the 1954 draft…PERSONAL: Born on March 8, 1933 in Youngstown, Ohio…Following a stint with the Cleveland Browns, he taught at Brookfield High School and in the Bristol Local and Lakeview Local School system in Cortland, Ohio…Is a member of the Cortland Rotary Club and several education associations…He and his wife, Adrienne, have three children, Rick, Randy, and Robin.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: A 1930 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School where he earned three varsity letters in football…KSU CAREER: Lettered six times for the Flashes, three each in football and wrestling from 1932-35…Member of Joe Begala’s undefeated squads in heavyweight in 1934 & 1935…Ohio heavyweight champ in 1933…Represented Kent at the National Intercollegiate Meet in 1934 & 1935…Played football under Merle Wagoner…Earned his degree in education (chemistry) in 1935…POST KSU CAREER: Captured the heavyweight title in the 1936 U.S. Olympic District Wrestling Tryouts…PERSONAL: Born on April 21, 1911 in Kent, Ohio…Taught in the Garrettsville school system in Portage County…Retired from Gougler Industries in 1976…He and his wife Pauline have two children, Bob and Janette.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER: Earned three varsity letters in basketball at Byesville High School at Byesville High School (it was the only interscholastic sport offered)…Led the team in scoring and was its captain in his senior year…Graduated in 1939…KSU CAREER: Earned six varsity “K’s” for the Flashes, three each in basketball and baseball under Rosy Stam and “Rabbit” Starrett, respectively…Captained the basketball squad as a senior and was named Honorable Mention All-Ohio…Served as president of the Health and Physical Education club, secretary of the Varsity “K” Club and was a member of Delta Phi Sigma fraternity as well as the Student/Faculty Allocations committee…Earned his degree in health and physical education in 1943 and his master’s degree in education in 1950…POST KSU CAREER: Played professional baseball in the Cleveland Indians organization with Batavia, Pittsfield, and Youngstown (1947-48)…Set Pony League record for most bases on balls in 1946 and was second in the loop in runs scored…Also led league shortstops in fielding…Served with the United States Marine Corps (1943-46)…Teacher and coach in Lake City, Florida at Columbia High School (1947-51)…served as a special agent with the FBI until his retirement in 1976…director of Marketing for Ramada Inn of Ocala, Florida (1977-82 PERSONAL: Born on November 11, 1920 in Byesville, Ohio…Earned nickname of “The Byseville Flash”…Married the former Ann Siyufy…Has one daughter, Nancy, two step daughters and two step sons…Member of the Elks, VFW Marine Corps League and Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI…Also a member of the First United Methodists Church of Ocala and serves on its administrative board.
