The Jud Logan - Al Schoterman LIGHT GIVER Scholarship
Established by: David "Joe" Pry, Stuart Horlak, and Andy Logan
Year Established: 2022
Sport(s) Supported: Track & Field
Background: The Jud Logan-Al Schoterman LIGHT GIVER Scholarship is given in memory of Jud Logan KSU '82 and in honor of Al Schoterman KSU '72. During Jud's junior year as a thrower on the track team, KSU hired Albert Schoterman, former collegiate record holder, two-time NCAA champion, and 1972 Olympian in the hammer. Al saw greatness In Jud and through his encouragement, and Jud's determination, the two created a lifelong bond. Upon Jud's graduation he got married and was hoping to go into broadcasting at the newly formed ESPN. One last dinner with Al before leaving KSU would forever change the direction of Jud's life. Al spoke to Jud of the upcoming Olympics in 1984 just two years away and asked Jud if he would like to go. As Jud always recounted the story, he was amazed that Al already had tickets two years in advance. THE LIGHT GIVER MOMENT occurred when Al told Jud to give him the next two years of his life and he would make Jud, who was currently ranked 27th in the USA, an Olympian. Jud went on to set the American Record 13 times in the Hammer Throw, win Gold in the Goodwill Games and participate In 4 Olympics (1984,1988,1992, and 2000}, representing the USA. Jud became the head track coach at Ashland University, where his track team produced Olympians and won National Championships. Like Al, he was revered by his student-athletes for being a great coach, but more importantly a LIGHT GIVER, mentoring their dreams and impacting their lives above and beyond mere coaching. Jud became a sought-after speaker and it was from his talks he encouraged others to find their LIGHT GIVER: someone in your life that sees more in you and helps light the path that you may have never seen or believed you could take. Al Schoterrnan was the LIGHT GIVER for Jud along with scores of KSU student-athletes who thrived under his guidance and friendship. Jud went on to compete in 27 countries and set the American record 13 times. For both he and Al, however, it was their role as LIGHT GIVERS to the donors, and countless others, that will forever be their legacy. The donors hope that the recipient of this scholarship can follow in the path cleared by these great men, and become a LIGHT GIVER and continue their legacy.

Dr. Lois J. Youngen Women's Softball Scholarship
Established by: Dr. Lois J. Youngen
Year Established: 2016
Sport Supported: Softball
Background: Born in Tuscarawas County and raised in Medina County, Dr. Lois J. Youngen found herself drawn to education and athletics as her parents were both educators and her dad, also a coach. During the summer of 1950, while still in high school, Youngen played softball in Wooster and Ashland. On a trip to visit family in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Youngen attended an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) Fort Wayne Daisies game, and tried out for the team under manager Max Carey. It was not until January of 1951 that Youngen received a letter from the Fort Wayne Daisies asking her to come to spring training in Alexandria, Virginia. She got out of school for three weeks and returned with one week left in her senior year. In that final week, Youngen attended her senior prom, graduated from high school and became a Fort Wayne Daisy. Not everyone who went to spring training made the team; this was something for Youngen to be proud of.
She played from 1951 to 1954 for the Fort Wayne Daisies and also the South Bend Blue Sox when the women on the team were, as Youngen puts it, "expected to look like Betty Grable and play like Joe DiMaggio." She played professional baseball in the summer while attending Kent State during the fall, winter and spring quarters pursuing a degree in physical education. She stayed active at Kent State playing intramurals, attending "play days," and "sports days." The AAGPBL which was dissolved in 1954 was popularized in the film, "A League of Their Own". Her years as a catcher and outfielder for the Fort Wayne Daisies and the South Bend Blue Sox earned her a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Lois who is a Past-President of the AAGPBL Players Association and currently on its Board, still makes public appearances on behalf of the AAGPBL.
