WHY IS KENT STATE ADDING A SPORT?

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME KENT STATE ADDED A SPORT?
The addition of women's lacrosse will increase Kent State’s sport total to 19, including 11 women’s programs. It marks the first addition of a varsity sport at Kent State since women's golf began competition in the 1998-99 academic year.Â
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE LACROSSE?
US Lacrosse reported that girls’ lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in high schools across the country, with a 29.8 percent increase of institutions sponsoring the sport from 2010 to 2015. It is also the fastest growing sport for women at the collegiate level, with a 33.6 percent increase at NCAA institutions sponsoring the sport from 2010 to 2015.
WHAT IS THE POPULARITY OF LACROSSE AT KENT STATE AND IN OHIO?
Women’s lacrosse is offered as a club sport at Kent State. In 2015, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) unanimously voted to sponsor girls’ lacrosse beginning in 2016-2017. Lacrosse will become the first sport in OHSAA’s emerging sports, with 118 schools that currently sponsor the sport through Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (OSLA).
WHAT CONFERENCE WILL KENT STATE COMPETE IN FOR WOMEN'S LACROSSE?
Kent State announced in May that the team will compete in the ASUNÂ Conference.
DO ENOUGH TEAMS COMPETE TO SCHEDULE REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY?
There are over 40 Division I women’s lacrosse programs in driving distance of Kent State. Nationally, there are 111 Division I women’s lacrosse programs.
WHAT FACILITIES WILL THE TEAM USE FOR PRACTICES AND COMPETITION?
Murphy-Mellis Field (Field Hockey Field) has been renovated for Lacrosse use. Team locker rooms and athletic training facilities will be available on-site.
WHEN IS THE FIRST COMPETITIVE SEASON?
Kent State Women’s Lacrosse inaugural season will take place in the 2018-2019 academic year, with competition starting in the spring of 2019.
HOW MANY ROSTER SPOTS DO YOU PLAN TO HAVE?
Women’s lacrosse rosters typically have approximately 30 student-athletes. Kent State plans to fully fund the program with 12 equivalency scholarships via annual increments.
