Golf Courses:
Muskoka Bay Golf Course
Placed #22 on Canada’s Top100 Best Golf Courses, Muskoka Bay is a luxury resort offering everything you’ll need for a perfect relaxing getaway. The accommodations are spectacularly designed and include lots of space and a beautiful course view. There is also a clifftop restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. With an infinity pool, fire pits and tennis courts, this resort is sure to please!
Oviinbyrd Golf Club
Placed #16 on Canada’s Top 100 Best Golf Course, it was developed in the Muskoka region to the north of Toronto by entrepreneur Peter Schwartz, Oviinbyrd is an exclusive golf club that first opened in 2005 with members playing on a Thomas McBroom designed course. Öviinbyrd was constructed as a modern members’ course – as opposed to a new layout built to host national competitions – and the comfortably-sized, tree-lined fairways are intelligently routed to make the most of the natural wetland areas and rocky outcrops that characterize the region. Oviinbyrd is the site of the inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Kent state and Penn State.
Mark O’Meara Course at Grandview
Two-time major champion Mark O’Meara knows a thing or two about golf courses and that insight is obvious to anyone fortunate enough to play the Mark O’Meara Course at Grandview. Winding its way through the granite, forest and wetlands of the incomparable Muskoka region, and with tees ranging from 7,065 yards to 4,750, Grandview is a delight to play. The course, site of the 2002 Telus Skins Game won by Sergio Garcia over Vijay Singh, John Daly and Mike Weir, and the 2002 Canadian Tour Ontario Open, is accentuated by a stunning clubhouse, and a nine-hole Academy Course.
Lake Joseph Golf Course
Placed #40 on Canada’s Top 100 Best Golf Courses, Rocky Crest Golf Resort is situated on the western shores of Lake Joseph, and the golf course opened for play in 2000. Trees line most fairways, giving a great sense of seclusion from the outside world. There are only thirty-five bunkers on the course as there are enough hazards with the aforementioned Canadian Shield. Water comes into play at several holes and both putting surfaces and fairways are constructed from bent grass. The use of five tees at every hole sees the overall yardage of this par 71 layout stretch to 6,936 yards. And after the round, there is a spectacular log cabin-style clubhouse to repair to. The signature hole is the 6th an intimidating 569-yard par five, where the drive from the elevated back tees has to carry a canyon – described by one commentator as “a three-acre chasm of naked granite” – that looks twice as wide as the actual 185-yard carry required. In the words of the architect, the gaping gorge and uphill tee shot at this hole “strike the fear of God into you”.
