Alex Marconi was promoted to assistant coach of the Kent State baseball program by head coach Jeff Duncan after he spent the 2013 season as the volunteer assistant coach for the team. Marconi now has more than ten years of Division I coaching experience in his young career. He currently oversees the team's defense and recruiting efforts.
Marconi has helped mold the catchers during the past three seasons as an assistant coach, helping the team maintain its 18-year streak of seasons with 30 or more wins. The program earned its 14th MAC Championship in 15 seasons when it won the MAC Tournament in 2014 and followed up with a MAC East Division title in 2015. The 2016 team earned the third-most wins in program history with a final record of 44-14 while also bringing home another MAC regular season trophy.
Before his return to Kent State, Marconi was the head coach at fellow Mid-American Conference member Ball State beginning in 2010. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach for the Cardinals for five years. His coaching career began in 2005 when he was named an assistant coach at North Carolina.
Marconi was a four-year letter winner for Kent State baseball, earning First-Team All-MAC and All-Region honors in 1999, as well as First-Team Academic All-MAC recognition. He was a team captain in 2000 and went on to be named First-Team All-MAC for the second consecutive year and Second-Team All-Region.
After his career at Kent State, Marconi was drafted in the 27th round of the 2000 Major League Draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He reached the Triple-A level in 2001 and 2002, and was invited to Major League Spring Training with Tampa Bay in 2003. His playing career concluded in 2004 with the St. Paul Saints, a member of the Independent League.
A Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, native, Marconi graduated from St. Vincent St. Mary High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Kent State University in 2001. Marconi and his wife, Mandy, have four children.
