Head Coach Jeff Duncan welcomed Tony Caldwell to the coaching staff in the fall of 2017. Previously, Caldwell played under Coach Duncan at Auburn University.
Caldwell is a Winter Springs, Florida native and attended Winter Springs High School. After High School Caldwell attended Auburn where he played four seasons before being drafted in 2011 by the Miami Marlins.
During Caldwell’s time at Auburn he was on the Johnny Bench award list three years in a row and a finalist his senior season for the best college catcher. During his sophomore and senior seasons, Caldwell led the SEC in throwing out base stealers. During his senior campaign, Caldwell led the nation by throwing out base stealers at 47% of the time. Caldwell was named to the All SEC Team his senior year and finished the season at the top of many offensive and defensive statistics. To this day, Caldwell holds the Auburn record for career throwing out would be base stealers. Caldwell is also the last person at Auburn to hit three home runs in one game and is tied with Bo Jackson for the record of total bases in one game at 14.
After spending 7 years in professional baseball, Caldwell noted that one of his great accomplishments was catching a no-hitter in his final season as a professional baseball player.
Caldwell graduated with a degree in sociology from Auburn. Caldwell’s Grandmother graduated from Kent State University and his father attended The Ohio State University.
