The Golden Flashes have now won seven Reese Trophies dating
back to 2000.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference
presented Kent State with the Reese Trophy for the fourth straight
year, for men's all-sports excellence Thursday night at the
MAC Honors Dinner at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. The
Golden Flashes have now won seven Reese Trophies dating back to
2000.
With a 9.83 average, Kent State finished more than a half-point
ahead of second place Eastern Michigan (9.28). Points are
awarded based on each of the 12 conference schools' finishes
in each of their respective sports, with the overall total divided
by the number of sports sponsored by each school. An
institution may count either indoor track and field or outdoor
track and field.
The 2011-12 academic year's top finish was bolstered by MAC
championships in baseball, men's golf and wrestling.
Men's track & field finished second at the conference
championships in both the indoor and outdoor competitions.
Men's basketball and men's cross country were each
among the top four teams in the conference, while football finished
third of seven teams in the East Division. Men's
basketball also earned a CIT Postseason appearance.
The men's golf team claimed their fourth straight and 20th
overall league title and are currently ranked 18th in the
nation. The baseball team earned their second straight
outright conference regular season title and 11th MAC championship
in program history. The Golden Flashes will be the No. 1 seed
in the conference tournament beginning May 23.
After winning the MAC regular season championship, the wrestling
team sent seven grapplers to the NCAA Wrestling Championships and
was ranked No. 13 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll.
The Reese trophy is named in honor of the first MAC Commissioner
David E. Reese, who served the conference from its inception in
1946 until 1964.
On the women's side, Kent State finished in a tie for fifth for
the Jacoby Trophy.
