The Kent State University field hockey team (6-8, 4-1 MAC) was shut out 2-0 by No. 20 University of Louisville (7-6, 3-2 MAC) at Dix Stadium today (Oct. 11). The Golden Flashes were undefeated in Mid-American Conference play.
In a balanced contest, Louisville had the edge in penalty corners (12-5) and scored both of their goals off those corners.
After more than 48 minutes of scoreless play, freshman Lisa Wasser bounced a shot off KSU goalkeeper Jessica Creedens pad into the goal for her second goal of the season. Wassers shot came from a designed play off a penalty corner.
With 12 minutes left in the game, a controversial ruling on another penalty corner resulted in a penalty shot for the Cardinals. Senior Desire Miller made good on the shot to put the game out of reach.
KSU had another all-too-familliar slow start today, recording just three shots in the first half.
We need to play with more intensity, said senior back Kelly Given (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). If we always have that sense of urgency we get when were down, wed kill most teams.
Creeden made three saves on five tries in the loss and senior Christy Hershey made numerous acrobatic saves, and eight total, for her third shutout of the season.
The Golden Flashes are back in action against Ohio University (5-7, 3-2) Friday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. in Dix Stadium.
