Powered by two freshman goals, the Kent State University field hockey team (8-9, 6-2 MAC) got one step closer to a regular-season Mid-American Conference (MAC) title tonight (Oct. 25) on Senior Day at Dix Stadium with a 2-1 victory over Central Michigan University (7-10, 5-4 MAC). The Golden Flashes maintained a one-game lead over the University of Louisville (9-8, 5-3 MAC) in the conference standings.
All the scoring took place in the first half. KSU struck first with an unassisted goal by freshman Kate Perry (West Vancouver, B.C./Collingwood School), her fifth goal of the season. Junior Kristy Reed evened the tally for CMU with a penalty shot goal at the 2:29 mark in the first half.
The Flashes scoring attack caught CMU off guard at the following tip and Defending MAC Offensive Player of the Week Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) knocked a breakaway shot into the right side of the net to finish the scoring.
KSU increased the pressure in the second half, awarded with four penalty corners in a four-minute stretch beginning at the 10:13 mark, eating up the clock.
The fact that we kept the ball down on their end and put them under a lot of pressure really helped us out with momentum for the rest of the game, said senior Becky Rahaim (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). Thats exactly what you want to do, especially in the last few minutes of the game.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Creeden (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) made four saves in five tries for her 28th career victory, good for sole possesion of fifth place in school history. CMUs freshman Danielle Frank made five stops in seven tries to take the loss.
Perry, Rischen, Rahaim, Creeden and the rest of the Golden Flashes begin the final week of the regular season at Miami University, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m.
